Ideologies are like that. It's a boundary for acceptable thought reinforced by a sense of community, and it's a fear of being ostracized for expressing unacceptable thoughts. Political parties, feminism or really political movements in general... LGBT spaces even gender roles. It's nice to imagine oneself beyond that, but I'm pretty aware of what affiliations bias me. I imagine most people don't acknowledge that.

All comes down to a sense of I'm this, not that. In group out group. In my case, it's a never ending liminal state. I'm kinda like this and kinda not. Transition I think detached me from any covalent bonds to any particular group. It's all loose affiliations now that I get attached to and break from easily. "Be like water."

I don't think its fine at all. It's sad to watch! I think the idea part is far less important than the fact these are teams and you follow your team, with whatever ideas they're going with at the moment. And the other team can go fuck itself. This inherently does not lend itself to compromise or resolution of issues. Due to the fact that opposing world views are all "correct" from the context which leads one to adopt them, the only winning move is not to play. Then you have a better view. Lincoln was convinced black people would never be treated fairly here -- so it would be best for them and whites. His black friend Douglass, talked him out of it. He was the only intelligent free black guy he ran it by and his disapproval was big to him.

They didn't want black people here for the same reason people don't want Mexican immigrants today -- they were viewed as lowering wages for white people and taking jobs.

At least that's the populist anti-slavery position. The elite anti-slavery position was about how wrong it was to treat black humans that way. It was well off whites from the northeast and a few elite black allies that made the core of this coalition.

Unions in this country, unfortunately, are organized at the firm level. So you can't get better pay for workers in your profession without making your firm less competitive.

This is why its a lot better system to have nationalized unions that have representation for all the workers of a given profession. So rather than making Amazon or whatever pay more to their workers -- you secure better conditions and pay for everyone working in a warehouse.

This helps more people while also not giving a competitive advantage to non-unionized firms. It also helps make the process less personal, more national and smooth. The peak organizations can agree not to fuck with things now that we are in a shipping crunch. But in this country -- that is stupid. You are only going to get concessions from the employer when they are desperate for your work.
