New vettes are mid engine, automatic, cockpit seating, exotic styling. They're real head turners in a way the C6 and earlier never were (the C7s are head turners though).

Don't give me any of that "manual transmission is better" nonsense either. It's not true anymore.

I was tempted to get one but the prices skyrocketed to what I think are ridiculous levels, like $80,000 for a $60,000 car. If you wanted a Z51 package it could easily push you over $90,000, and the cars simply are not worth that much no matter how much the supply chain issues messed up the pricing. I settled on a different car entirely.

Automatics outperform manuals now, both on the street and on the track.

That wasn't the case until recently so you needed a manual if you wanted performance.

It does have a manual option in the form of paddle shifting, but the stick shift transmission is a relic of the past. My current car has paddles too but I never use them.

We are actually approaching a point where gasoline-powered cars will be relics of the past. I think even the Corvette is going electric soon.

The fact is manufacturers removed them as automatics became standard because you have to learn them. They also have promises for an all EV future, EV's do not have manual transmissions so it wouldn't make any sense to have them.

Driving a Ford F600 flatbed and some sort of old Peterbilt cured me of any desire to ever shift gears the old-fashioned way unless I have no choice. Hated every second of driving those heaps.

As for electrics, the attempts to gradually defacto mandate them is effectively an assult on rural America. They suck for long distances, and suck even worse in the cold. Performance cars are probably a good use for that type of technology, electric motor torque curves being what they are.

Speed, engineering and control of the driver are all factors also, as well as the drama, intensity, bad luck, parts breaking.

The roots of American motorsports begins with depression-era kids who went down to the local junkyards and purchased junk model Fords. They stripped them down and added what speed parts were they could.

It was something for poor folks to do, because you only had radio. No TV, no Internets. It also became part of American culture. In fact, the salt flats were just guys going out to remote areas to get away from the cops.

Drag is almost moot, NHRA already put a bullet through its own head when it went to nancy 1000 foot distances and anti-blow-over protection bars. Likewise NASCAR is doing a great job of killing itself without electrics needing to do anything at all.

Drag did survive the introduction of nitromethane, then jet turbines. Power source, alone, shouldn't kill it.

You are missing the spectacle. EV make no sound, smell and are mostly purchased by rich guys. They also come on the backs of environmental causes so drag events would probably be seen as wasteful.

It's a race to the bottom, the lowest common denominator of globalization. Today's youth driving their globalized econo-boxes don't know what they're missing and they're convinced that what they have doesn't suck because they don't know any better.

Straight across seat, nice soft ride, your honey can slide across and snuggle up as you cruise along, that's a better life. Modern cars are pretty much only good at rust resistance and suck at absolutely everything else a street car is supposed to do. Now with electrics it's more or less a quiet war on middle america. Hydrogen is a better path if gasoline absolutely has to go. Anything with a battery will always suck.

As for stick shifts, I don't oppose their existence, just don't like 'em myself after fighting with stupid truck transmissions a few times too many.

Prior to the van I've always driven Cadillacs and Buicks. The wife has had a smattering of Mercury or Lincoln in there.

After experiencing the misery of a late-model Nissan loaner (they called it an Altima, I call it a rolling torture box), I am dead serious when I say I would rather drive an '81 K-car than a modern car. I couldn't sit in that Nissan 15 minutes without getting a sore back.

The first one I had was an Altima, but I lost that one when some dude totaled it when it was sitting in a parking lot. It was okay, fairly efficient.

The Rogue gets like 27-28 mpg, at least, and it's mostly comfortable. I can't speak for the back issues. I always get those wooden bead drape things like a taxi driver, and my back rarely hurts (for that reason, anyways) unless I am on an extended road trip and driving 10+ hours per day.

I don't understand the concept of an electric "muscle car". If you have the fabrication skills, you could simply put an old muscle car body on a Tesla chassis. I guess it would be the same thing, the aftermarket for EV's are mostly cosmetic (like computer games) and is verging on contempt.

Edit: You are not going to intimidate anyone pulling up to the local tech center in an EV-Dodge Charger that makes no unsettling sounds, like the kind that scare women and young children.

Is there a concise, accurate study somewhere that shows how electric cars are actually better for the environment?

Like, a normal car burns fossil fuel and produces co2. A tesla runs on electricity, which by and large is produced by burning fossil fuel and producing co2.

Is there a clear chart or graph or something showing that EV's are a net carbon reducer, given that electricity isn't free, nor is all of the energy required to manufacture and distribute electric cars, and the required infrastructure to actually replace gas cars?

I'm sure somebody has done this comparison, and I assume it's a net benefit to drive a tesla, but I also have a suspicion that most proponents of electric cars think they run on magic, pollution-free energy. And those same people are always rabidly against nuclear energy, which is far closer to actual pollution-free energy than anything else we can currently implement.

I agree. You can make an electric sports car easy enough. When all that matters is lap times electrics should do well, hence my comment earlier. Lot of modern sports cars already look and sound stupid anyway. Muscle cars are a different breed and there's no point to such a thing without the sound, the burpling exhaust, the car rocking side-to-side when the driver revs it up, and the ability for the owner to tinker with it himself. I expect them to be lost to the advancement of technology or become playthings of the wealthy like the famous models of yesteryear already are, $100K-plus Hemi Cudas and such.

At the rate we're going at hollowing out the middle class, in thirty years only the wealthy elite will be able to afford their electrics or grandfathered-in older gassers anyhow, while the poor masses will be riding around in rickshaws like some third world slum. They'll laugh from over their gormet meals in their gated communities and call that progress while they pat the modern-day-peasants on the back for sacrificing their quality of life and eating bugs.

Unironically, yes. The majority of today's 20 year olds can't hope to afford most new cars, let alone something that's actually nice. That is a big part of what's wrong with modern America.

Since then it's been a lot of tail-chasing and diminishing returns, and the consequent destruction of interior design since interiors are now designed around the Hybrid III. I miss 5 MPH bumpers, never should've repealed that standard, feels like a modern car takes $5K damage if I look at it cross-eyed.

Despite being very good at driving manual (driven one for years), I was worn out with manuals because driving to and from work every day in stop and go traffic sucks when in a manual alternating between neutral and first gear the entire way. Automatics outperform manuals now, both on the street and on the track.

That wasn't the case until recently so you needed a manual if you wanted performance.

It does have a manual option in the form of paddle shifting, but the stick shift transmission is a relic of the past. My current car has paddles too but I never use them.

We are actually approaching a point where gasoline-powered cars will be relics of the past. I think even the Corvette is going electric soon.

In border states (and most), there are no non illegal operated landscaping companies.

Landscaping is a great job, you just cant compete when your entire crew breaks the laws that the other crew has to follow.

Construction is the same. The crew is 90% illegal. Same with even state operated highway maitnence, pretty much any job where you hurried people for short duration labor contracts. (the entire keystone XL pipeline for example would have been built by mostly illegal immigrants)

Hey our market is huge and very valuable. If we impose stiff penalties on them operating in it(which I'm counting as a tariff :)), they'll be forced to privatize and no longer be a tool of the Saudi state.

I and some others have been saying this ever since the dramatic minimum wage increases were announced. It's going to backfire. Sure, workers will be paid more but those companies and employers will pass the extra expense on to the consumers and soon enough prices will have risen to a point where the minimum wage increase is cancelled out by the inflation it caused.

Putin pretending to be a conqueror is making it even worse, along with the covid mess.

Wage increases only work if prices for goods and services remain the same, which they won't if employers have to pay more wages. It's not the only cause of inflation but it's one of them.
