I kinda ruled that out as I stopped all meds cold turkey from the day I got out of the psych ward till one week ago. I actually feel a tad better again with my meds on board. Back to about two weeks regular maintenance. Little more energy. Less absolutely abysmal tremor ridden lows.

I think flattening the curve is a reasonable strategy, with the provision that as more effective treatment regimes are discovered, and as more is invested into healthcare staff/equipment/logistics, countries should be able to loosen restrictions: their healthcare services will have developed better capacity for providing treatment so the relative burden caused by infection would be reduced.

I mean...tough times call for tough choices. One big problem with this virus is we just don't know a lot about it. We might get some studies that get published with some factoid that it lives on surfaces for 2 hours, then 8 hours, then 14 days, but again we're in the early stages of gathering knowledge on this disease. Most diseases we've had years to study them in the medical community. But people like to know things, so when a study comes out people in the media often parade it as fact, when we all know we can get biased studies out that say a lot of things. Some people can really abuse their "authority" and present themselves as somehow knowing more than other people.

Example, back in early March someone I know who is a nurse tried to tell me that covid was "nothing to worry about" and that I should really be concerned about measles coming back (measles is a scary as fuck disease though, we just happen to have like a vaccine for it.) "It (covid) can't live outside a human host for more than 2 hours." Right as she was telling me this I couldn't help but think that there's no way she could know this shit, the disease is too new for anyone to be certain of this crap, but her family and friends probably trust all that she says as fact because she's in the medical field.

As far as policy goes, this not knowing is really daunting. We can't even get politicians to agree on things when they know the consequences of the policies they're trying to enact. Most people probably agree that the virus is more contagious and less lethal than the reported case death rates, but the magnitudes of which are still unknown. Even so, what are we up to 45,000 dead (USA) even with all the social distancing, most schools canceled, almost no one flying, large gatherings canceled, people washing hands like crazy and wearing masks. We don't even know how long previous people who have been infected will have sufficient antibodies to fight off a future infection, so maybe herd immunity might not be a great strategy. Maybe this will be a new seasonal flu type thing trying to guess what the right strands are.

Back to Blackbellamy's previous post, it's kind of like that but even those scenarios proposed are only possible scenarios. 100,000 dead, but is that with or without social distancing? Without mass gatherings? The unemployment one, did they attempt to isolate if that was the case with what may possibly only be temporary unemployment? I mean the only 20/20 vision we have is looking back, and we'll probably get some decent control groups (like Brazil) to see how the responses to this virus fared versus others.

There's so many different variables here to work through it's tough, the biggest one is people. Some people look at this virus and think "well if there's no one telling me I can't do things it's probably fine." For example when the social distancing guidelines came out without the orders, many parks were crowded as all hell. But then those same people when mandated to stay home might think "fuck this bullshit you can't tell me what to do, this is America."

Honestly I'm no epidemiologist or any kind of expert, but my opinion on what was going to happen in the states was that 1) the spread wouldn't be quite as explosive as in Italy due to a younger age, people more spread out, not as many smokers, not as touchy feely culture, and we banned large gatherings about the same time as them so earlier in the spread relatively speaking. I do think it will be more prolonged though, due to it reaching places a little slower, minimal social safety net for people losing jobs, people not wanting to go to the hospital because of the exorbitant costs, doctors and nurses getting laid off, people over their heads in debt, and a good chunk of the population just won't want to listen to extended social distancing guidelines or orders.

Ventilators are a medical necessity when a person is in respiratory failure. It is correct to say that a lot of people die once they get to the point of needing ventilation, but barring intubation, your only option is BIPAP/CPAP, and that’s a hopeful solution because those options are less invasive and less effective (they are a step down from mechanical ventilation and generally aren’t indicated when you’re at the point of needing to be intubated, IE less invasive measures have already failed)

Maybe, maybe not? These are the statistics coming out of NY right? Each population is going to have different factors, it's kind of hard coming out with appropriate statistics for the whole of a nation just from NYC. I think I remember seeing something out of Norway where only 40% of people on ventilators died. Maybe this is due to them going on the ventilator earlier than people in the US or also due to the fact that in Norway people are way more healthy and not fat as shit. I've kept reading that one major big red flag is the lack of oxygen (like altitude sickness like you said) and for most people this might not be easy to spot, so they will put off going to the hospital until it's really late in the process. I know I don't have an oxygen meter or whatever is used, do you? When you have a huge spike in illnesses (which is what we're trying to avoid) I think a lot more of these cases are going to fall through the cracks, because the average person could very well think they're fine until their O2 levels are critically low. To be honest, again we really don't know. I don't think any study that has come out has had time to really be fully peer reviewed and I've seen plenty of skepticism around pretty much any report. Nothing coming out is gospel right now

It seems like right now people go in with an opinion, find a study they think suits their opinion, and then discount other studies as somehow flawed, and this happens on both sides of the political spectrum and the different views on how to handle the coronavirus. Even people who are trained pretty well to try and run studies or analyze studies to recognize and account for any bias they have will fall victim to it somewhat, and at this stage of the pandemic there are no shortage of people (almost all unqualified) willing to spout their opinion from the mountain tops. It sure seems like the WHO and the CDC have made their fair share of mistakes, however it seems like for the most part Dr. Fauci has refrained from making false assumptions about this virus. I think this gets him in trouble sometimes with the media because he doesn't have all the answers like people want.

I think people need to just be more skeptical of any information they're reading, and remember it very well might not be true. It may not be that people are purposely misrepresenting data or trying to manipulate you, they just might not know better or are working with incomplete data.

Myth 1. Contact Tracing. First off, this virus can spread in the asymptomatic phase and you can't start contact tracing until some presents with the disease, so its usefulness is blunted from the beginning. Second, our public health system did not have enough trained personnel to do all the contact tracing work for other diseases before coronavirus--where are we getting the actual people trained to do contact tracing?

Myth 2. Antibody testing. So the idea is we just give people an antibody test and if they are positive than they are immune and safe to be moving about. Sounds great, right? Except we don't have a good idea of what these tests mean with regards to immunity. First problem, false positives. Many of these tests cross react with antibodies raised by your body against non-COVID19 coronaviruses that you have been exposed to in your life. Second problem, without a vaccinated control group that we know is immune, we don't know where to set the threshold of the test to claim immunity and this varies for every disease. We have no idea what a positive on these tests actually means in terms of immunity.

Myth 3. Herd immunity. Viruses evolve. Every person that gets infected is an experiment for the virus. It makes billions of copies of itself and everyone has a chance to be a new mutant that will evade any herd immunity that has been acquired and will start spreading freely again. If we let this virus just burn through our country, everything we know about viral evolution tells us that it will evolve variants that can reinfect those that are currently immune. This is one of the reasons for keeping the global case count low, until a vaccine can be developed. But once a few major variants develop, than it is likely to mean a new permanent human disease and a very different and worse problem for the world.

Myth 4. Treatments. Viruses are not alive and that makes them very hard to "kill". The simplest bacteria that we have discovered has to do nearly 200 biochemical and biophysical reactions to stay alive. Many of those reactions can be targeted specifically (without hurting our cells) with drugs to kill the bacteria and that is why we have so many effective antibiotics. Do you know how many biochemical and biophysical reactions a virus needs to do in the environment? Zero. That is why it is not alive. It is inert. Understand that drugs to treat this disease will only reduce symptoms. That may save lives, but people will still be in hospitals and on ventilators. The likelihood of a magic cure is very remote. Cures for most viruses don't exist, vaccines however do, which must be taken as a preventative measure. We are really good at making those and we will, it just takes time.

The current thinking within the scientific community (that I'm hearing from at least) is that, by the end of June, more than a few metropolitan areas in the U.S. will be at NYC levels during its peak. Atlanta may be one of them, based on how the general population is responding.
