It's too narrow of a view. We have reached the next tech tier as a species and this was our opportunity to restructure violently without the trigger of warfare. I am concerned about the decision to proceed status quo (ie, the people who own the rights to Gone With the Wind remain the owners of Earth and continue not working, but plebs remain required to "rain dance" to quench thirst because getting things for free is evil).

A UBI in temporary form should have been implemented immediately to reduce outdoor population density. Nobody should be required to leave the house for want of resources right now. That is one way to throw money at the problem.

Nonessential work ought to remain shuttered indefinitely. Make home movies or something. Our society is, point proven, extremely vulnerable to biological warfare at present and we'd rather wimp out because COVID-19 is unproven to be synthetic than to step up and implement effective measures to deal with a pretty easy virus. Like to build the distribution network and employment system of the future -- one that can operate swimmingly even despite it avoiding humans contacting deadly pathogens. People reentering the workforce should be entering a new workforce with new standards of hygiene and aseptic technique, working fewer hours at high-skilled jobs with an emphasis on developing an elite medical workforce and industrial base. Filth-pot McDonalds jobs, and all manual labor, can end; those slots can be filled by robots. You should be tempted into the festering, infected marketplace -- not coerced.

I think this was a vision Trump had, and that he imagined the repubs would be resisting UBI proposals at this date, but the Democrats realized early in the crisis that their base wouldn't even ask for money even as the state underwrites our rulers for another ten-thousand luxurious lifetimes. We are definitely absent a very important leader in this crisis.

Social measures need to be part of a strategy to buy time for improving hospital/care capacity. The increase in capacity will allow the health sector to better deal with increased workload (without getting overwhelmed) once social measures are eased.

I remember when I was in primary school. Some police came in to teach us about "stranger danger" and "say no, never go".

It took me decades to realise, but having an authority figure coming to school to tell me "unmentionable horrors* WOULD befall Jimjam for interacting with strangers" actually ended causing me significant social anxiety, which fortunately now I have largely grown out from.

I’m curious what adjusted deaths per million means.

It looks like the graph is showing countries that were doing testing on minor cases (which would have recovered with no/little treatment) vs those that would only test you if you were in a severe condition (or even post mortem in the case of many elderly care home residents in the UK).

I have links to the UK and Greece, I can tell you in Greece the people, government and other organisations took the virus very seriously and had a very effective lockdown, essentially eliminating the virus from the country. At that point people started to break lock down as there was no threat and the government capitulated.

The fact there was such a severe lock down but no cases has caused a backwards think in Greece that there never was a virus and it was a hoax (instead of the correct rational which is the lockdown prevented the spread of the virus). Unfortunately as the borders reopened and people ignore social precautions the insidious virus is worming its way back into the country and looks about to explode.

Incidentally my elderly aunt who lives in Athens passed away a couple of weeks ago and her cause of death was not listed as Covid. She was an absolute star whenever we visited. She’d ask who wanted a pizza and who wanted souvlakia. Regardless of how adamant we were she should only order one or the other she’d always get everybody both. And she always had beer in for guests. Absolute legend.
