I can see some pseudo civil-war between Lady Stoneheart's crew/the people who abandoned the BWB when she took over, with Gendry being important in that.
Maybe... But for some reason I can't help but think he is important to Lightbringer making an appearance. I dunno..Still kind of slowly rereading the books (kinda been slacking) so maybe I'll change my mind, but the feeling I have that he is connected to how Lightbringer reappears is just nagging at me. Maybe it's totally tinfoil though...
Dear gods, I just wanna know finally! :D

I got Roland and edric mixed up. That's who I meant. I think that since he gets shipped to the free cities that varys will pick him up.

maaaybe, but we know that by the end of 5, the spider is still lurking within the tunnels, as he paid sir kevan a visit. dont think hes gonna go anywhere. hes more useful to Aegon if he stays in KL. i think edric might legit be done with the story, which is why the writers knew itd be ok to merge edric and gendry for the show. just my opinion

Illyrio/Varys. Let's not quibble Big Sirks. I'm not so sure that the show is really going to end up being even remotely close to canon on the side stories just due to production costs and changes in characters.
Question: Does Theon lose his cock in the books too? It's hinted that he does, but his inner monologue also says he wanted to fuck one of the spear wives that Mance brought with him.
Also, I find myself liking Theon more and more as he turns to Reek. So much has changed for me on this reread. Honestly considering just skipping doing an intermediate series and re-reading for a third time!

im with you on Gendry being important. i dunno if it has to do with Lightbringer, or with the Baratheon line, or possibly even with Arya (finally uniting the Stark and Baratheon lines after all these years). but surely important.

Got to say, in this re-read Jaime and Jon have really become two of my favorite reads after ASOS. They both are just becoming two of the best lords in the land imo, and especially Jon's vision and leadership is stunning even if he does mistakes. For a 15 year old "man" he is doing fucking spectacular and things in the long term. It's really unfortunate that I don't think Jaime will survive the series when I think he honestly might be shaping up into a better Lord of the Rock than Tyrion could if only because he's noted to be a man that men follow. Tyrion has really become a bit of a cock sucker, even though I think he's far more analytical than Jaime. I think Tyrion will be oneo f the three riders and eventually hand to the King, perhaps. But I'm really not sure how he's going to gain acceptance in Westeros due to his appearance and his past. He's a kin slaying, (believed to be) king slaying, scarred up dwarf. Except of course for the go to deux ex machinima in this series: Dragons.

am i the only one that refuses to forget Jaime pushed a 10yr old boy out a window, crippling (and almost killing) him in the process :p If Jaime can get released from the white cloaks on account of his hand, he could easily end up the lord of casterly rock. otherwise that will probably to Tyrion at some point.
Jon makes mistakes thats true. but unlike Robb, Jon recognizes them, hes aware of them, and he learns from them. i truly would not be surprised if Jon ended up "winning" the game of thrones.
Poor Tyrion, and how dare u call him a cocksucker! lifes been hard on the lil guy! but his legs are too short to grip around a dragon. i also see him possibly ending up as hand

just because most of them are scumbags doesnt give him a pass to also be a piece of shit :P
the guy pushed a 10yr old boy out a window and crippled him. i just cant get over that. i mean yea he lost his hand and hes really turned over a new leaf, but every time i think good of Jaime, i think back to Bran. maybe i have soft spot for him.

I read the books after watching the first two seasons. I wonder how my feelings on casting would be had I read the books before seeing any of the show. I definitely pictured the actors as their characters while reading the books (though Dinklage is much too attractive to truly be Tyrion. He's supposed to be one ugly mofo, and not just a damn dwarf!)

dont forget Tywin Lannister and Syrio Forrell should be bald. and i HATE that they have Julius Caesar playing Mance. HATED last season Daario, glad he got swapped. and really can't stand the kids playing Mira and Jojen. but for the rest of them, A fucking + imo

I don't mind Tywin not being bald at all given how hard Charles Dance has absolutely crushed the role. His interactions with Arya in S2 were an absolute delight and will make me miss him when he's gone (though he absolutely deserves what he gets and I'm so damn excited to see it!)
Same with Syrio. His scenes with Arya were fantastic.
Apparently you just need to be in a scene with Masie Williams to be on the positive side of the ledger for me.

whoa don't get me wrong, i think Charles Dance's portrayal of Tywin is utterly amazing, and one of (if not) the best on the show. i was simply referring to the appearances ;)

So I've been pondering lately, and I've decided to make the official switch. I now support Jon Snow for the Iron Throne. While my loyalty to the Mannis has been steady as steel since the first time he appears, I must support Lord Snow. I don't believe Mannis is personable enough to keep the lord paramounts tractable. He is too harsh and unforgiving to ever truly rule. That plus how it looks the story will pan out...(I support winners)

honestly, i think ive recently switched to that as well. but only because im convinced Dany will die saving everyone from the white walkers.
but speaking of Stannis then, i personally see him going to become the 1000th lord commander of the nights watch? do u agree with that? or u got other end game theories for stannis?

Well, I've skipped over the new comments and am making sure not to read anything while I'm typing this. I started reading the first book last night before bed and that was a stupid mistake. Stayed up way too late when I had to be up at 5:30 this morning! It's been a long time since I've read any books that keep me up at night. The brother/sister thing right in the beginning is kind of creeping me out but I have heard this is a pretty twisted series!

Don't read a single sentence of this thread.
Also, have fun when you finish A Dance With Dragons and start to realize that G.R.R.M. might actually finish the TV series before the book series :(

I read the books back in high school and waited for SOOO long for the 5th book to come out. These books are amazing, suprised this is the first time I have seen this thread lol. Anyways I waited until like a month ago to finally start watching the show because I didn't want to be disappointed and I have to say, I was amazingly suprised. Their casting of all the characters is awesome, just like reading the books... I HATE Cersei, I HATE Joffrey, I HATE Jaime and then slowly began to like Jaime. And my two favorite characters in the books were just as spectacular on the show, Eddard and Jon Snow. The show draws me in just as much as the books do, I can't wait for the 4th season to start, added HBO to my cable just to see the premier haha.
P.S. I watched all three seasons using HBO on demand in a matter of about a week.

I didn't mind Syrio and Tywin not being bald. Other than that I completely agree with you on the rest. Particularly about Ciaran Hinds as Mance. It's just wrong. But let me say this, he was perfect as Julius Caesar in Rome. i LOVE pod. one concern i do have, we saw Brienne a couple times in her new armor that Jaime will give her (along with the sword), but we did NOT see Pod in any of the trailers. i will seriously fucking cry if they cut out Pod and Brienne. However, if they cut out Lady Stoneheart (and i think that they will), they can also cut the Brienne/Pod story, as Pods only real purpose is to be used as leverage against Brienne to make her bring Jaime to the brotherhood. and i really dont like that Brienne lies to Jaime before they disappear off together (never to be seen again)

I just got done watching it again and I wanted to mention that I am disappointed with Daario Naharis #2. I really wanted to like him and I don't get why they can't get him right! I don't think it would be that difficult to make him actually look like a Tyroshi warrior, blue forked beard and all. Sad to say but they probably should have just kept the first guy if they wanted to continue being lazy about his character. What do you guys think?

PS. I loved the Hound and Arya teaming up and kicking ass. Overall I really enjoyed the episode. Am a little miffed about Ice being melted down, though. I knew it was coming but there is just something sacrilegious about seeing it happen. That awesome Valyrian sword that belongs to the ancient and royal House of Winterfell. Makes me sick to see it in the hands of the Lannister upstarts.
Ah well, such is life in Westeros... I didn't get to see the preview for next week because my stupid dvr cut off too early. Gonna go look for it.

Spoilers Below - you shouldnt be reading this if u havent read all FIVE books
i really doubt it. i think the entire resurgence of "The Faith" will be season 5. remember book 4 ends with all that, and they should only be hitting the beginnings of 4 & 5. honestly i think that with Joffrey dying next week at the PW, Tommen gets crowned, and Cersei is finally in a position to show what she can do (since Tywin, Tyrion, and Joffrey will all be gone). sadly we all know just how good she is at ruling things.
this poor woman is going to lose (one way or another) her father, her brother/imp, her brother/lover, and her oldest son. life gonna get hard real fast.
but back to the faith and walk of shame, really dont see that happening this season. if we see anything about the faith, it would be towards the end, and it wouldnt be much more than allowing the high septon to bring back the faith militant. but even that would be one hell of a stretch for putting in this year. i think they'll keep it all for next season and make it the main focus of Cersei's season 5.

Lol omg. My husband is constantly singing or humming "The Rains of Castamere" for the last few days. He has a great baritone voice and sings it well, but now I can't get the song out of my head.

From the synopsis of tonight's show it would seem like it's going to follow the book and introduce Penny, but I have a bad feeling they changed the "entertainment" entirely.
"A who's who of honored guests turns out for Joffrey and Margaery's wedding in King's Landing, but the king's taste in entertainment rubs many of them the wrong way. Meanwhile, Bronn gives a lesson to an unlikely pupil."
In the books, no one was really outraged by the entertainment except for Tyrion, if I recall correctly. Most of them thought it was hilarious because no one likes the Imp... Plus, I couldn't find anything about them casting a Penny.
I wonder what they've done instead... Bleh. 6.5 hours to go.

i found a pretty little article for you to go over,
On page 683 of A Storm of Swords, King Joffrey finally bites the dust. Though no one was sad to see him go, his death left the readers with a bit of a puzzle--who really killed him?
The most obvious choice, as presented later in the book, is Olenna Tyrell, the Queen of Thorns. However, there are several other lesser suspects that are brought up from time to time, though they are almost certainly not responsible. These will be dealt with first, before looking at the evidence pointing to Olenna.
I. TYWIN LANNISTER
Cold, formidable and not one to be slighted, Tywin seems like just the man to murder his own grandson at his wedding feast. But where is the motive?
It comes on page 593 of A Storm of Swords. Joffrey has just been dismissed from the small council after mocking Tywin for supposedly fearing Aerys.
“The boy is thirteen. There is time yet.” Lord Tywin paced to the window. That was unlike him, he was more upset than he wished to show. “He requires a sharp lesson.”
Tyrion had gotten his own sharp lesson at thirteen. He felt almost sorry for his nephew. On the other hand, no one deserved it more.
This speech of a ‘sharp lesson’ could very well foreshadow Joffrey’s death. But upon closer examination, the quote appears to be more of a red herring than anything else. Though rather platonic toward his family, Tywin never seems like the man to become a kinslayer. Even when Tyrion is accused of killing Joffrey, Tywin tells him that he would rather see Tyrion on the Wall than executed. And though upset, Tywin appears far more logical than being reduced to poisoning his grandson over some petty slight. All in all, the motives don’t match the character. There is no further evidence pointing toward Tywin, and quite a lot to the contrary.
II. TYRION LANNISTER
Tyrion was accused and found guilty of murdering his nephew. But did he really do the deed? There are some pieces of evidence, but many more to the contrary.
1) The Motive--Bran’s attempted assassination
The morning before the wedding, Tyrion presents Joffrey with a wedding gift that is rather ill-received. Proclaiming that he ‘is no stranger to Valyrian steel,’ Joffrey takes his new sword Widow’s Wail and proceeds to cut Tyrion’s gift into pieces, then demands a new one. At this point, Tyrion undergoes a slight epiphany.
“You and Lady Sansa owe me a batter present, Uncle Imp. This one is all chopped to pieces.”
Tyrion was staring at his nephew with his mismatched eyes. “Perhaps a knife, sire. To match your sword. A dagger of the same fine Valyrian steel...with a dragonbone hilt, say?”
Joff gave him a sharp look...
---pg. 664, A Storm of Swords.
This dagger Tyrion is referring to is the one that the assassin used to try and kill Bran as he slept, Valyrian steel with a dragonbone hilt. (A Game of Thrones, pg. 136). Tyrion has just realized that it was Joffrey who sent the cutthroat, and is subtly telling Joff that he knows.
However, Tyrion later worries over what Joffrey might do because of what he discovered:
He squirmed uncomfortably. He ought to have held his tongue at breakfast. The boy knows now. My big mouth will be the death of me, I swear it.
---pg. 668, A Storm of Swords.
We can conclude that Tyrion was worried that Joffrey would try and kill him over what he knew about the boy’s role in Bran’s attack. This suggests that Tyrion had a motive in Joffrey’s murder. However, from other information we have, it seems clear that Tyrion is not the murderer.
2) The Drained Chalice
His eyes fell on the wedding chalice, forgotten on the floor. He went and scooped it up. There was still a half-inch of deep purple wine in the bottom of it. Tyrion considered it for a moment, then poured it on the floor.
---pg. 684, A Storm of Swords.
This is quite a curious action, and will later be used against him in the trial. But why did he do it?
The answer is relatively simple. Later in A Storm of Swords, on page 736, Tyrion thinks to himself that Sansa probably killed Joffrey. When Tyrion drained the chalice, he was trying to protect Sansa from being found guilty. As Jaime says, Tyrion “gets these fits of gallantry from time to time.”
3) Tyrion’s “Confession”
On page 874 of A Storm of Swords, an enraged Tyrion tells Jaime that he did kill Joffrey. Yet this confession is a lie brought upon by Tyrion’s anger, and is clearly false. In many other places throughout the book (most notably on page 736, as noted above), Tyrion’s thought processes make it clear that he did not poison Joffrey. The only possible explanation would be if Tyrion suffered a memory lapse after putting in the poison, an event that seems extremely unlikely.
III. OLENNA TYRELL
On page 769 of A Storm of Swords, Littlefinger tells Sansa quite a lot about the political situation in King’s Landing, including who killed Joffrey--Olenna Tyrell, the Queen of Thorns. While Littlefinger is not known as the most honest of men, it seems likely that he is telling the truth. Why?
1) The Motive--Margaery’s Safety
Littlefinger tells Sansa that Olenna’s motive for killing Joffrey was so Margaery would become a queen without risking Joffrey’s crazed notion of justice and angry beatings. Certainly, GRRM seems to have been leading up to this. Earlier in the book, Olenna and Margaery spoke with Sansa about what a monster Joffrey was, and did not seem surprised by what Sansa had to say...almost as if they already knew, and were simply confirming the tale. Yet strangely, Olenna does not seem to fear for her granddaughter’s safety at all.
So yes, Olenna’s motive certainly fits better than Tywin’s or Tyrion’s, and has enough evidence to support it.
2) The Hairnet
Littlefinger tells Sansa that the poison came from a jewel on Sansa’s hairnet. This appears quite likely to be the case for several reasons.
On page 743 of the book, Maester Ballabar and Maester Frenken confirm at Tyrion’s trial that a throat-constricting poison was used to kill Joffrey. In the series thus far, we only know of one such poison...the Strangler. On page 20 on A Clash of Kings, Maester Cressen makes the Strangler out of crystals strikingly similar to those on Sansa’s hairnet--small and colored deep purple. It comes from a leaf grown near Asshai. And, coincidentally, on page 914, Dontos gives Sansa the hairnet and says the crystals are from Asshai.
So it seems the Strangler was the weapon used. But did Olenna use it? It seems quite likely. On page 672 of A Storm of Swords, Olenna does come and straighten Sansa’s hairnet, giving her a prime opportunity to grab a crystal. And she does...on 686, Sansa notes that one crystal is missing from her hairnet. And Olenna certainly had a chance to drop in it Joffrey’s drink...on page 681, she comes tottering up with Margaery to talk while Tyrion is pouring Joffrey’s wine.
Just as one last confirmation, we have a third-party who also states it was the Strangler in Sansa’s hairnet that killed Joffrey...though not so directly. As the Ghost of High Heart prophecizes on page 491:
“I dreamt of a maid at a feast with purple serpents in her hair, venom dripping from their fangs...”
The dream matches Joffrey’s murder exactly.
The only question is why Olenna bothered with snatching a jewel from Sansa’s hairnet in the first place, instead of carrying it to the feast herself. There is really no explanation for this, except that maybe that Olenna wanted somebody to pin the murder on in case they discovered it was the Strangler that had killed Joffrey. The fact that Olenna wanted Sansa to come to Highgarden after Joffrey’s wedding shows that, while she may have framed Sansa, it was as a last resort only, and she certainly didn’t want anyone to suspect her.
Another possible explanation comes from Cressen’s thoughts on page 21 of A Clash of Kings. Cressen reflects how the process to make the Strangler is long and tedious. Perhaps Littlefinger knew a man who made the poison...but the process was time-consuming. By the time it would be done, Olenna would be in King’s Landing, and Littlefinger would have no way to get the poison to her without Varys’s spies watching. The only way was to make an inconspicuous exchange via the hairnet.
3) Was Littlefinger Involved?
It seems quite likely that Littlefinger is partially to blame for murdering Joffrey, and that he was in cohoots with Olenna. He certainly had time at Bitterbridge to plan such a murder with her...and implies as much, while talking with Sansa. Also, it was Dontos that gave Sansa the hairnet with the Strangler in it. Since Dontos was under Littlefinger’s employ, it seems likely that Littlefinger gave Dontos the hairnet to pass along to Sansa, in order for Olenna to be able to use it.
Also, Littlefinger tells Sansa on page 768 of A Storm of Swords that he knows the murderer was the one who straightened out Sansa’s hairnet. How could he known this if he was not present at the feast? The only possible explanation is that he and Olenna had already planned it ahead of time.

Wall O' Text
Olenna def took the stone from Sansa's necklace. I was watching closely for that. I then tried to watch to see if she was ever close enough to Joff's cup to drop the stone in on her own and I didn't see her in range to do it. So, I was just wondering if she gave it to Margery at some point and Marge dropped the stone in... There looks to be a quick slight of hand on Margery's part when she takes the cup from Joff to put it on the table. I'm basically wondering if Margery knew what was gonna happen or if Olena did it all on her lonesome.

Found that too just after the show, and all I can say is getting married in Westeros is a bad idea..

So. Anyone else thinking that Shae maybe didn't make it out on the boat to Pentos? If she did I suppose it's a neat and tidy way to get rid of her on the show, but wow, it would be so different than the book.

Margaery definitely knows. She's a sly little minx who is nowhere near as innocent as she likes to appear to others. It's clearly the women in charge in the Tyrell family and the elderly Queen of Thorns needs to pass the torch to someone like herself, only younger. Margaery.

nope, not possible. the trailer (from 4-5 weeks ago) shows a scene with Shae laying in the bed in the tower of the hand. aka Tywin's bed. bitch did not get on the boat, Bronn even skirts around the question when Tyrion asks.
im thinking Bronn was taking her, and Tywins men intercepted. remember he tells cersei to bring Shae to the tower of the hand.
so yea, expect that to go down as it did in the book ;)
Oh good. I'd forgotten about the trailer. Excellent.

Olenna passed the gem to Margaery at some point when everyone was busy moving around and chatting after she snatched it off Sansa's necklace. Then Margaery dropped it into the wine right after Joffrey passed his goblet to her to set down on their table so he could chop open the pie with his new sword. Joff takes a bite of the birdshit pie and then orders Tyrion to serve him the wine that is now spiked with the poison so he could wash it down.
Lol, btw. Cersei was hilarious in this episode. Just the most evil bitch but it made me laugh.

i 100% assure you that it was not Sansa. poor girl had no idea she was being used as a poison mule, and has the worst pokerface in kings landing. in the book its Olenna, in the show i like Sidelle and Funk theories of it being Margaery. in the book, Olenna talks to Joffrey and i believe thats when it's slipped in if i recall correctly. but in the show it would appear that Olenna is never within an arms reach of the goblet.
hopefully Baelish will explain it all to his daughter "Alayne Stone" in the upcoming episodes.

AND
that peck that played Joffrey in the display at the wedding, he looks enough like Tyrion to maybe be mistakenly killed by some sailors and turned into Cersei, maybe?
if they take away strong belwas AND penny, i will not be pleased.
edit - also fun fact: they casted the character "Leaf" for this season, and i have yet to see anything for "Coldhands", sooo CH probably cut from the show. and to all the nerds pointing to the whitewalker in the trailer and in the preview, GTFO because Coldhands was not a whitewalker, he was a wight.
edit x2 - AND IIRC it was Coldhands that kills the traiters/survivors from Craster's Keep, and that Bran finds out because he warged into a wolf and saw it.

i like the nightwatch oath. havent read these books and only jerked it to the nude compilation but i felt a connection with the oath. im looking at becoming basically a caregiver and ranch hand for a retiring artist, and because im always on the property i literally will just stand around sometimes in the dark! no sword though... i modify it as such, omitting certain parts
"Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the watcher. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the horn that wakes the sleepers. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come."
im not really that dramatic but its accurate as far as the description of the persons life... i can only make it if i help others to make it, and together we will rape hateraid to death

Maybe the white walkers aren't really "evil" at all... maybe THEY built the Wall to keep the First Men OUT of the far north? I mean, it's a giant magical wall made of solid ice, and we know they have powerful magic abilities and a fondness for the cold. Seems like it would fit perfectly with GRRM's theme of nobody-is-truly-good-nor-truly-evil. Maybe they've just been defending their lands the whole time!

So, um, it may have been the Night's King. At least according to the HBO website for a while.
The Night's King is a legendary Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, who lived during the Age of Heroes. According to legend, the Night's King lived during the Age of Heroes, not long after the Wall was complete. He was a fearless warrior, who was named the thirteenth Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Later he fell in love with a woman "with skin as white as the moon and eyes like blue stars", he chased her and loved her though "her skin was cold as ice", and when he gave his seed to her he gave his soul as well. (Her description matches that of the Others.)
He brought her back to the Nightfort and after the unholy union, he declared himself king and her his queen, and ruled the Nightfort as his own castle for thirteen years. During the dark years of his reign, horrific atrocities were committed, of which tales are still told in the North. It was not until his own brother, the King in the North, and Joramun, the King-Beyond-the-Wall, joined forces that the Night's King was brought down and the Night's Watch freed. After his fall, when it was discovered that he had been sacrificing to the Others (possibly in similar way to Craster), all records of him were destroyed and his very name was forbidden. It is likely this led the lords of the North to forbid the Night's Watch to construct walls at their keeps, ensuring the keeps would always be accessible from the south.
While on his way north, Bran Stark recalls stories told to the Stark children of the Night's King and the Nightfort by Old Nan, servant in Winterfell. She said some people believe the Night's King was a Bolton, a Magnar out of Skagos, an Umber, a Flint, a Norrey, or a Woodfoot, who ruled Bear Island before the ironmen came. However, she identifies the Night's King as a Stark of Winterfell and brother to the King of the North and hints his name too was Bran.
now moving on to the great other, The Great Other is the god of darkness, cold, and death in the faith of R'hllor. His true name is never spoken. He is considered the enemy of R'hllor, the Lord of Light. Followers of R'hllor believe that there are only two gods, R'hllor and the Great Other, who wage an eternal war over the fate of the world. All forces of darkness, cold, and death are believed to be only servants to the Great Other. Melisandre refers to the Others as the "cold children" of the Great Other. The Great Other has never been mentioned by any Westerosi although all know of the Others from legends. According to Melisandre sleep is a little death, dreams and whispering of the Other who would drag everyone into his eternal night. At the Wall, when gazing into the fires, Melisandre sees a wooden face, corpse white, a thousand red eyes, and a boy with a wolf's head beside him. She thinks to herself that they must be the Great Other's champions, as King Stannis is hers.
Further evidence in the text ties the Last Greenseer, Bloodraven, the Old Gods, and Bran Stark to the theme of darkness that draws The Great Other into opposition with R'hllor. The vision of Melisandre pointing towards Bloodraven and Bran as champions of The Great Other is corroborated in this exchange:
There he sat, listening to the hoarse whispers of his teacher. 'Never fear the darkness, Bran.' The lord's words were accompanied by a faint rustling of wood and leaf, a slight twisting of his head. "The strongest trees are rooted in the dark places of the earth. Darkness will be your cloak, your shield, your mother's milk. Darkness will make you strong.
In an apparent paradox, on one hand the attractive Melisandre and her "Lord of Light" R'hllor clearly display "evil" practices such as human sacrifice in their magic. On the other hand, the twisted Bloodraven and broken Bran (a universally sympathetic character) use the darkness as their ally to merge with nature and apparently aid the forces of "good." However, the true motivations of Bloodraven and the children of the forest are not yet apparent.
and then of course u have Melisandre saying:
Beyond the Wall, the enemy grows stronger, and should he win the dawn will never come again.
it is far more likely that someone from the show misspoke imo.

Still been thinking about this. Seems possible to me that "Night's King" might be a title instead of an actual specific individual, similar to "The King in the North" for the northerners. Maybe the Night's King from the myth above (thanks Sirken!) was only the first one, or the first one to call himself that? I feel like they wouldn't have gone back and edited the synopsis on the HBO site if the name "Night's King" wasn't an important detail in the first place. Seems possible that some web intern got a copy of the wrong synopsis and made a mistake posting details he shouldn't have.
There's also the fact that the spikes on his head seem to form a sort of crown: http://i.imgur.com/HMZwi6y.jpg
However, the most interesting thing to me is the fact there are 13 Others in the scene: http://i.imgur.com/ocRIXSl.jpg
Where else have we seen the number 13 recently?
He was a fearless warrior, who was named the thirteenth Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.
We also know the 13th Lord Commander was the brother of The King in the North at the time, so he was most likely a Stark, or closely related to them.
his own brother, the King in the North
Getting really tin-foily here now, but bear with me. We also keep hearing how there "must always be a Stark in Winterfell." Currently, there is no Stark in Winterfell. So maybe... the Other we saw at the end of the episode might be the Night's King, who was also a Stark at one point. Maybe they know that there is no Stark in Winterfell at the moment, and they're moving back south to reclaim it?
... Okay, maybe a little ridiculous. Still fun to think about :)

the nights king can not be the great other, the timelines just dont match up. the nights watch was created to protect the realms of man from those white walkers (whom were all created by the great other). The Great Other created the Whitewalker that the 13th lord commander of the nights watch fell in love with. the nights king was also slain by the combined forces of the king beyond the wall & the king in the north. White walkers are not dead people or reanimated corpses, those are whigts, they are thralls to the whitewalkers. Wights are dead men or creatures raised up by the whitewalkers, seemingly when touched by the cold that accompanies them. Anyone who falls against the Others must be burned, or else the dead will rise again as their thralls. Fear of their own dead becoming wights leads the free folk to burn them.
i love you sir. the stark in winterfell thing is because if there is not a stark in winterfell, they will lose it and they will lose the north. dat game of thrones (although for a while i had a tin foil theory about this as well, involving the stark family crypt and ghosts).
this entire thing tells the song of ice(whitewalkers, the great other, lyanna stark) and fire(dragons, R'hllor, rhaegar targaryen).

The thing I most liked about this episode was finding out this show could actually shock me (much like non book readers and red wedding reaction). I keep thinking...ok that is the end....ok thats it. Once I saw the alter I shouted WTF quite loudly. I never thought about the whitewalkers do with those babies. Makes sense now, but I figured they used them in black magic or some shit. This also tells me that they've been stealing babies for however many thousand of years they have been absent from world affairs.
I also wonder...if a whitewalker can change a human baby into a whitewalker....Could they also change an adult? What if Ramsay Snow makes a deal with the frozen devil? Just a thought.
I also love that the show is changing things to allow for more interactions, its only making the show greater for that freedom, to fill in blanks and take liberties...i dont see it changing much in the end. Id love to see if the show ends one way and GRRM does it differently in his last book.
I know GRRM has input on the show but I do hope that what is presented as fact in the show does not force his hand in the development of the book. Small things like turning babies into white walkers or Others are one thing that will probably never be explained by the book and that's a cool bit of trivia. But the poisoner's/s' identity is still just a theory in the books and is a pretty big deal. I hope that if that was initially a red herring, GRRM can remain committed to whatever plot he initially intended. Hope that makes sense.

the show started shocking me when they cut neds dreams from season 1. i think readers are shocked by cuts/changes more so than the actual events. the things we see but havent read are things we still knew were going on, we just hadnt had a first hand account. i thought most people accepted that the WWs were either turning the babes, or, killing them for some form of sacrifice.
i dont think any WW can change them, i think that was the point of the ritual, its kind of a big deal, and i think only the great other can change them. (if that special WW was actually the nights king and not the great other, then im forced to believe theres been more than one nights king in the last couple thousand years, as the first one was killed by the combined efforts of the king in the north and the king beyond the wall.
and i agree with u on your last bit. with the show-runners knowing how the series ends from the mouth of GRRM, and with GRRM heavily involved in the show, you can bet your ass that he will not let the show ruin his lifes work.

I think the way they redid the Bran/Jon stuff was well done.
They removed them almost meeting on the other side of the wall from last season at the Tower in that abandon town when Jon was getting chased by Wildlings - and replaced it with them almost meeting at Craster's and Bran having an even tougher decision to make.

i honestly dont think he wants to stop writing these books. as i read, i can almost see him dragging his feet and lolly gagging around wasting time, filling pages, just as an artificial build up to something. after 5000 pages we get it.
I called Robert Jordan's death halfway through the series, and I didn't know of any health issues at the time. I just knew he was biting off more than he could chew.
Martin needs to wrap this shit up. If he dies and they try to have a ghostwriter finish the series, I won't read it. The last WoT book was the worst book I've ever read in any genre.

It's funny how tastes differ, I actually really enjoyed AMoL and as far as /r/wot is concerned (as far as I can tell) everyone really appreciates what Sanderson did with the series. To each their own though because everyone has their own tastes and I can respect that.

If I heard people saying how great Sanderson's stuff is, I might check it out but I've never heard anybody say I should read one of his books. It appears if he's the biggest fantasy author going, it's only because he got himself associated with Jordan.
I liked the first two books he did. Both got off to slow starts but had moments of awesome that made them worth the read. The last one was unsalvageable for me because of the CHAPTER OF DOOM and the fact that I couldn't buy non-channelers going to challenge a forsaken leading a full circle of 72 channelers to single combat... dum.

Shit flies by when there's not much to complain about. If they fucked up ASOIAF the way the did the lord of the rings movies, I'd still be bitching about it 6 months from now instead of pining for the next season.

Chin up, Sirken.
Gendry will be back, if not this season, then definitely for season 5. Didn't Davos tell him to "have a bowl of brown" for him when he gets back to King's Landing? So he'll be hiding out in Flea Bottom.
Of course, Varys will find out he's there and finally more of Gendry's destiny will unfold with Varys holding this trump card close until he is needed.
