I think most people are institutionally trained to be consumers and a best consumer is one that is "accomplishment" gratified. That means you're trained to feel good upon acquiring stuff. Like you buy a new car, that's an accomplishment for you, and since you're told 24/7 that's what important then you feel somewhat good. You're always rewarded for completion. Bonuses paid out, report cards, contracts, projects, everything has this final thing to to it, ding and you're done!

But many people are actually "progress" gratified. These people feel good about making strides. So when they finally accomplish something, put closure to their quest, it's not a big thing, because they're no longer making progress. So they need another thing to challenge them.

That's a great psychological barrier for many people to break and they constantly feel unhappy in their lives. They feel they're going to finally feel happy when they get that thing and then they get all fucked up because they feel empty or angry or confused. They surround themselves with material things or try to collect trophies. But it's never enough.

Not saying for all. I know all kinds. I know some working people who did stuff like roofing and car repair and they inherited big-for-them money and they did all retire and have fun and play with their kids and it's been going on and on so it worked out for them.

I actually agree with you on a lot of issues. The difference between you and I is I don’t belong to either of these teams. And I’m not trying to win the Internet. It doesn’t bother me one bit that you feel I’m not qualified to make a decision on what the right thing to do as far as protection versus this virus. Right but that expression does not apply at all. He did not say "the virus isn't real don't take any precautions whatsoever it's totally fine just do whatever!". He simply questioned the efficacy of masks and the degree of the threat from a virus with a low death rate even compared to the flu, especially in relation to the economic impacts overzealous lockdowns have. Many medical professionals have also done this, there is by no means a consensus. "Middle of the road" is always what people say when they want to say "join my team or else!". It doesn’t bother me one bit that you feel I’m not qualified to make a decision on what the right thing to do as far as protection versus this virus. What I will tell you is the only thing I do care about is that if I can get just one person, Democrat, Republican, white, black, or orange to take the proper precautions and potentially save another human beings life, then I have done my job. I don't think we really disagree here. I guess my point was only that people selectively assign blame to whoever happens to be president when something bad happens, when in fact the way the country was founded grants most of the power to the states. People want to have it both ways though.

If he tries to make federal level declarations to control the virus in some way, people say he's overstepping his authority, which he kinda is. But when state governors utterly fail to do anything meaningful and in some instances make the problem worse, people say "this is what you get in trump's america". Ditto for the riots.
