The reason so many of the people who died on the island weren't in the sideways reality was because that was created by those who's most important time was spent on the island. Such as most of the main cast who made the relationships that they cherished forever.
Eko wasn't on the island long enough and didn't bond with the people who were in the sideways universe. Also his actor wanted out of the show when his character died, so he wasn't coming back. Some who died on the island are probably still stuck there like Michael, doomed to be one of the whispers, at least until Hurley changes the rules and sets them free from an eternity of being stuck. And Christian flat out explains that the sideways universe doesn't exist at a specific time, since he describes some of the deaths to Jack as "well before or well after your death". It was basically like a holding tank for all of them until they were able to accept they were dead and move on into the light. So no, they didn't die in the initial crash, the last shots were basically to remind everyone where it started. At least that is how i see it. Still want to rewatch the episode to take it all in. | ||
