The Steam controller is pretty different from a normal controller. Normal controllers usually have a D-pad and two joysticks. The Steam Controller has a D-pad, only one joystick, and a trackpad.

The idea is that the Steam controller lets you play games where you'd normally want a mouse (like Civ) by providing a trackpad. The problem is the trackpad works really poorly at simulating a mouse. And because the Steam controller doesn't have two analog joysticks, it's basically unusable for games where you need two joysticks (like Rocket League or Dark Souls).

This. I didnt like the trackpad on the steam controller at all. It was so small that it didnt emulate a mouse very well and i use a trackball mouse on a regular basis.
