MMO - 100,000 players...
UO - 1st..
EQ - Second
Meridian - Never..

I think Daoc actually would be third.
Well... if you want to go by numbers...

We don't really have a timeline for that "first to 100k" number, though my understanding is it was less than a year after release, which would put us somewhere between March 1998 (6 months) and September 1998 (1 year).

My point being that if you're going to try and call Ultima Online the "foundation" for modern MMO's, you need to give as much if not more credit to Everquest as well. It wasn't any one game, it was a combination of several that give us our WoW's and EQ2's and SWTOR's.

Well they did get in trouble for allegedly stealing code from DikuMUD
Wouldn't be surprised if they did... DikuMUD was A+. Plus the Godwars derivative codebase nearly invented MMO PvP. That shit was cut throat.

Raid rules early AM? Derubael ain't got time for that......defending the time lines of MMOs vs a UO fanboy, comes out both barrels blastin'.

Advertising? Best when kept simple, the common man doesn't think.

"EverQuest, how hard can it be? You are not prepared."

Appealing to the Dark Souls crowd, and the little kid MMO crowd who think they are beyond old games.

Project 1999 Everquest-for aging hipsters that want to relive their early 20s since the memory is just a haze with all the drugs and alcohol they've done in the years since

Project 1999 Everquest-a midlife crisis cheaper than a sports car

I would just show the word "Everquest" with quick stream of in-game action of raids/characters/battles etc to Prince's "1999" song
"....and tonight we're gonna party like its 1999!!"

Remember that game you played in middle school? The one where you died all the time to rats and never could find any quests to do? Well, it was ironically called Everquest, and at Project 1999 we're simulating it for your enjoyment. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn the definition of the word 'poopsocking'. We've got 14 classes to choose from, and 5 of them are really fun all the way to 60!
