Eliminating the student loan interest freeze to end the debt ceiling negotiations was a poison pill accepted by an irrational republican caucus.

Two Georgia Republican senators coming out right at the end of the 2020 election and saying they opposed $2000 in Trump stimmy money, pissing off both Trump and most American households that wanted free neetbucks, tipped the Georgia election and therefore the Senate to the Democrats.

There are 40 million student loan borrowers holding $1.6 trillion in student loan debt that each had $10-$20k ripped away from them by Republicans. The health of the economy is the single greatest predictor of the outcome of an election, especially for an incumbent president. If you think tens of thousands of dollars being on the line isn't going to tip the balance in otherwise tight races, I don't know what to tell you. GOP support is paltry among the young, and boomers are rapidly dying-- Trump's support won't have grown between 2020 and 2024. Even certain people on this very board who used to lick Trump boot are bitching about him.

Basically, if we manage to avoid a recession through Q4 2020 and if Biden doesn't keel over, leaving behind a wildly unpopular and most likely equally incompetent vice president, betting odds don't look good for Trump.

The thing about Kamala Harris is, winning black voters is integral to the few Democrat paths to victory. This is extremely constraining and makes the prospect of an alternate VP pick unlikely. Although she is also not even all that popular with black voters, tossing her aside for someone that would help against Trump could cause a revolt if he picked the wrong person.

If the GOP playing games with the teaching of slavery and critical race theory in schools and their rhetoric about black lives matter isn't enough to deter them from voting R, I can't imagine what would be. What Democrats don't seem to understand is that Southern black people as a bloc have entirely different approaches to issues than the popular media image, which disproportionately reflects the voices of younger, college-educated black folk. Fond of Democrats but in many ways far more conservative. I think that partly explains why Bernie got stomped so hard.

Yet another terrible fucking thing about the electoral college-- catering to a few key voters in a few key states leading to a shitty vice president, a shitty leader running the direction of your country.

One of these is plainly unlawful and was known to be plainly unlawful by the perpetator.

Interesting you think voters, most of whom are low-information, give a fuck. Twenty thousand dollars and year(s) of frozen interest accrual ripped away by a Republican congress and a controversially partisan Republican supreme court. Even if you interpret it as an optics strategy by Democrats to pin an impact on American wallets to Republicans, it's still a shitty fucking move on behalf of a GOP that took the bait lol. They could have kept the interest freeze and let the supreme court take care of the $20k.

They didn't even bother presenting an alternative for student loan borrowers. At least when they were still trying to dismantle healthcare, they said the meaningless words "health savings accounts". Choosing between reducing personal debt and government debt, what voter is going to choose the latter? In the privacy of a voting booth, likely not many. Which is why Medicare has been so fastidious in spite of being insolvent.

I rate this claim as false. (https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1091/vote_109_1_00044.htm#position)

The Republican-led bill tightened the bankruptcy code, unleashing a huge giveaway to lenders at the expense of indebted student borrowers. At the time it faced vociferous opposition from 25 Democrats in the US Senate.

But it passed anyway, with 18 Democratic senators breaking ranks and casting their vote in favor of the bill. Of those 18, one politician stood out as an especially enthusiastic champion of the credit companies who, as it happens, had given him hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions – Joe Biden.

If you have your student loans forgiven, you get to retain all the knowledge you learned in college but it's as if you didn't pay, or it's at least like you 20% didn't pay depending on which specific policy we're talking about.

So if I paid 100k to go to college without any loans, can I get 20% and\or all of it back? Cause that 20-100k would be sweet rn

Point is, in the United States we have a principle of standing in Stark contrast to the debtor's prisons which existed in historic Europe, and reified the concept of debt-slavery.

I don't think student loans should be forgiven carte blanc, but if someone is filing for bankruptcy, student loans shouldn't have special laws which make them exempt from discharge in a bankruptcy proceeding. In a bankruptcy proceeding assets are liquidated to pay creditors what can be recovered and the remainder of the debt is discharged so as not to place the debtor in a position which likely ensures repeated bankruptcies.

The only other debts which cannot be discharged in a bankruptcy are certain kinds of back taxes and fines, typically in which the cause is tax fraud or tax evasion assessments, child support and alimony, and restitution for criminal convictions of malicious assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Student loan debt does not equivocate itself in comparison to the rest of the field of discharge exemption.

Landroval
08-29-2023, 06:26 PM
This means, if someone meets the qualifications of a continued undue hardship caused by the continuance of these loans in an official bankruptcy proceeding, than they should be discharged.

We live in a highly nepotistic society; it's not what you know; it's who you know. As such, since this society fails to be purely meritocratic the concept that the education received in the process of requiring student loans cannot be directly translated to either opportunity or earning potential to justify possession of the knowledge itself, as an infungible asset.

Therefore, without the bullshit changes to the law some 20 years ago, the determination of the student loan obligation should be made based upon each individual's actualized income history, and a conservative income forecast.

File for bankruptcy....you'll get to walk away from the loan in a better position than someone with a student loan.

I'm not arguing with you about retarded hyperboles, Goomba. If you don't like your loan obligation for your house and your renovation, zero out in a bankruptcy proceeding; at least you can.

We're talking about bankruptcy law here, dumbass; not "should everyone with student loans get free money?". That's irrelevant to the discussion.

Ironically, prior to 1998, this was how student loans already worked. If you got zeroed out in a bankruptcy, you got zeroed out.

The reason why Biden's bill was deemed unconstitutional is because it was never meant to actually resolve the issue. The issue is, the categorization of student loan debt as "exempt from discharge", needs to be repealed. The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act, and the 1998 Higher Education Amendments Act need to be repealed, applying an Oprah prize of 20k is what got struck down; he never intended to actually address the issue, directly, and never will, no one in the establishment even wants to.

We're talking about a bunch of greedy ass government Jews on both sides of the aisle here, why would they? Actually resolving the issue by repositioning the debt class of student loans back to where they were classed before is the last thing (either party of) the Jew wants. So they keep you here arguing over red herrings, while the commie Jew says "muh capitalism". It's Jewry all around, when the solution is actually much simpler; repeal those two acts.

The long-winded analysis of the student loan matter is much more nuanced and rooted in class division. Corporations wanted to institute college-education as normative employment criterion, but collegiate-education was the bastion of upper class privilege.

In order to circumvent the plausible allegations of utilizing scholastic achievement as a discriminatory hurdle, student loan offerings needed to be widely expanded to accommodate a lower class influx of students which would not conventionally qualify for student loans with the conventionally much more selective financial criteria for student loan qualifications.
Because of this, and in an attempt to make private universities more prestigious (see: exclusive), the laws that were drafted to ensure, and insure, student loan payback were made much more strict and unforgiving on the private student loan market, in order to ensure that the theretofore "upper class" would continue to monopolize the chart of alumni moving forward at prestigious private universities, on the basis that their payback was already assured by intergenerational wealth and nepotism.

Public student loan, however, were made to be much more widely available to the layperson with the caveat that to ensure the continuance of "class permanence" they, too, would be made inescapable in bankruptcy proceedings, as it was highly probable that many of the "lower class" students would remain impoverished, as continued discriminatory and nepotistic hiring practices would ensure they were excluded from the lucrative positions their now attainable educational-acheivement would otherwise qualify them for.

As such, the current status of student loans being inescapable in bankruptcy proceedings is made to solidify class distinctions, and failure to meet their obligations results in a drastic marring of one's credit score which necessarily and fundamentally perpetuates class inequalities.

Of course, there are racial undercurrents within these class distinctions, as is obvious to anyone with even a modicum of understanding about WHO holds the majority of this toxic student debt (predominately women, and majoritive black women), but the primary goal of the extant legislation on the matter is the collaboration of corporate and government institituons, to perpetuate social-class-based inequalities.

I'm inclined to agree with the bank, not because I think housing values are going to drop, but because when interest rates come down, the loan is going to be a lot cheaper. But if you truly needed a new roof immediately I guess your hands were tied. But 8.6%, ouch

Indications are that households are beginning to exhaust their COVID-era savings and hiring has slowed a bit. Even if it's an actual soft landing and not a recession, I imagine they may very well drop interest rates within the next 2-4 years. There is so much pent up home demand at this point with interest rate fuckery and long term tight market I can't imagine a big decline in real estate.

they (whoever) overplayed that hand. They showed their true colors prematurely.

What they should have done, is release the virus, offer their pre-made solution as they planned, without making it a ridiculous political mess. That way, when they release their next pLandemic, they would have had modern data sets to release and back up their claims.

Upon the release of the following plandemic, the public would acknowledge that they shoulda woulda coulda, and "They" would have had a public, social and gov't platform to legitimately stomp citizens' rights.

Having tried to do everything-all-at-once, the citizens realized that "They" never had an interest in public health, but rather stifling and curtailing basic freedoms.

now Globobozo has to go back to the drawing board to figure out how to implement their "final solution"

And after they said since this is false do you want to say anything about this, like retract your statement, and he said no no it's true, im a lawyer i understand evidence. What? Tons of people have no idea who oj simpson is, even today. Sure, he was a famous football player. He wasn't the literal president of the entire country over which the jury pool is being selected.

Also there were not throngs of people completely poised, eager and ready to convict OJ simpson on literally any charge before he killed his wife. The evidence against him was absolutely overwhelming from day 1, in contrast to this trump derangement performative clown show which is the legal equivalent to an angry kid getting revenge on their older brother for teasing them.

The charges should be dismissed. That's what we should do, because they have no merit. The charges against OJ simpson should not have been dismissed, because they had a *ton* of merit- because they had a *ton* of unambiguous evidence against him. Get the difference yet?

here ya go bud. Either a judge or grand jury has seen and evaluated the prosecution's evidence in all of Trump's trials.

The Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution states in part: "No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia when in actual service in time of War or public danger." The requirement of an indictment has not been incorporated against the states; therefore, even though the federal government uses grand juries and indictments, not all states do.[15] As of 2019, all states besides Pennsylvania and Connecticut still use grand juries to indict suspects for some offenses.[16]

In many jurisdictions that use grand juries, prosecutors often have a choice between seeking an indictment from a grand jury and filing a charging document directly with the court.[17] Such a document is usually called an information, accusation, or complaint, to distinguish it from a grand-jury indictment. To protect the suspect's due process rights in felony cases (where the suspect's interest in liberty is at stake), there is usually a preliminary hearing, at which a judge determines whether there was probable cause to arrest the suspect who is in custody. If the judge finds such probable cause, they bind, or hold over, the suspect for trial.[17]

The substance of an indictment or other charging instrument is usually the same, regardless of the jurisdiction: it consists of a short and plain statement of where, when, and how the defendant allegedly committed the offense. Each offense is usually set out in a separate count. Indictments for complex crimes, particularly those involving conspiracy or numerous counts, may run to hundreds of pages. In other cases, however, an indictment for a crime as serious as murder may consist of a single sheet of paper.

Indictable offenses are tried by jury, unless the accused waives the right to a jury trial. Even though the Sixth Amendment of the Constitution mandates the right to a jury trial in any criminal prosecution, the vast majority of criminal cases in the US are resolved by the plea-bargaining process.[17]

My position is these charges aren't valid as a 'crime' until he's convicted. Until then it's just a court case.

"frivolous, partisan, politically motivated prosecution?" This would not have made it past the indictment stage across three separate cases, including one Trump-appointed judge that is still in that stage and trying to drag it out as long as possible.

maybe he'll have a heart attack from all the viagra and german cough medicine

this is reality now tho, politicians were previously hyper-sensitive to political optics, now that's gonna increase x1000

republicans have already started in on Biden crimes now

it's just gonna be a cycle that plays out every 4 years. President gets elected, the legal troubles pile up for 4 years, president is incapacitated by dealing with all their legal problems, and is unable to actually do the job of running the US.

and that's exactly how globobozo wants it

just like 1861, Democrats don't give a fuck about this country unless they can convince everyone that they are victims and that the party is their only salvation. If they can't have it, then nobody can.

unlike 1861, republicans are not prepared for this fight, nor do they even understand how they are being fought.

Appreciate this story, this is interesting

There’s a lot of nuance to this though. A parent disappointed with what public school is doing with their kid really should look at either private school or homeschooling, those are options available

And I understand the school’s concern about not wanting to “out” a child who might be gay, the timing and method of reveal of that to their parents should ideally be up to the child. For counselors anyway, a child’s sexuality is confidential, a counselor is under no obligation to reveal that to a parent like they are of thoughts of self-harm or suicide (those the counselor ARE obligated to reveal to parent)

But gender identity and sexuality are different, it seems schools are lumping in gender identity with the “don’t out kids as being gay to their parents” rule when these are two very different things

A settlement was made to make the issue go away.

In fact the UBU club was only temporarily suspended and is coming back in the school.

I can only speak from the mental health side of things, but a parent has a right to not only sit in on every one of their child’s counseling sessions (good luck getting the kid to open up then though, heh), but also to request the counselor’s case notes for any session they didn’t attend

However

A counselor can choose to redact any information which might cause psychological or physical harm to the child. An example of this would be a child’s sexuality, if the kid has conveyed that the parent does not support that sexuality and would likely have some sort of response emotionally damaging to the child. Redacted information would be crossed out with a black bar

A counselor cannot redact information which are threats of harm the child said, those have to be immediately communicated to the parent

My small issue with this is kids tend to catastrophize things, you wouldn’t believe the amount of kids who claimed their parents would be “furious” at them, etc, then through follow up found out none of that shit ever happened

Even we adults tend to screw up and personalize things, a kid is 10x worse at that. Sometimes a parent will just express frustration that their kid is choosing to open up to their peers and counselors and not their own mom or dad who cares deeply about them. It’s a combination of hurt and frustration expressed from the parent, but what does the child see? A disappointed, scowling parent. And so the child interprets this as “see, mom is furious at me”

So when a child reports potential psychological harm from a parent finding out about something, I always wonder if it is just another possible misunderstanding

A department official also said during a news conference Wednesday that the government will “seek to recoup the cost of these discharges” from the institution’s current owner. The University of Arizona acquired Ashford, a for-profit, from its parent company, Zovio, for $1 in 2020 to create the nonprofit University of Arizona Global Campus, an online college that’s affiliated with but "separate" from the University of Arizona.

Back when I was going there it was because some frat got expelled for participating in some dorm porn videos

I couldn’t get into any college parties there, if you didn’t have more girls with you than dudes, those douchey frat bro’s wouldn’t let you in. So I couldn’t personally attest to that

But co-worker’s parties were off the chain anyway (cars down the block) so F ASU

Same thing happened at San Diego State (another big party school), except the frat was selling cocaine. Almost went there but decided against it. San Diego State, Chico State, Arizona State, UC Santa Barbara were the epic west coast party schools. Thing is, when a school gets that reputation they try to change it, so probably not like that anymore.

It's not good faith, and their loyalty to Trump isn't conceived in any type of logic or morality, which is why I'm truly not being insulting, just using accurate language, when I call them cultists. "Me and my people are the 'right' type of people + Trump is on our side, enrages the 'other', and fights for the 'right' type of people = Whatever Trump does is right, and whatever the 'other' does is wrong, regardless of moral judgments. It's plainly apparent over and over and over and identity politics taken to an extreme. This is why projection is such an appealing tactic for them.

"Well Joe Biden Crime Family Butter Emails George Soros (((Shadow Cabal))) Nancy Pelosi Bernie Sanders $1M Home Blah Blah" ignoring the fundamental fact that liberals do not have this cultlike devotion to any politician, if any of these missteps were even at the same scale as Trump's mafia-like behavior, which they aren't.

Most liberals are truly lukewarm about Biden, Hillary, etc. The Democratic party just does not have a strong magnetism among liberals, it's fundamentally dysfunctional as a party because it has some very disparate factions under its umbrella. Most high-information liberals utterly despise the neo-cons that make up the mainstream Democratic party, but are at the mercy of an utterly broken system where elections in a highly plural country of 300 million are determined by a few key groups in a few key states. Add on the fact that the entire system is at the whim of an old-school House of Lords where Wyoming, population 578,000, gets to send its two slobs to D.C where they have the same say as California's (population 40 million) two slobs in gatekeeping anything that has to do with legislation.

Supporting trump is perfectly logical; literally every relevant metric of prosperity was better while he was president. He had fairly good domestic and foreign policy all things considered.

Now, I think that was mostly all by accident cause he's basically a celebrity who ran for president as a stunt and actually got elected. But every administration is basically just a hodgepodge of people with varying influence and something inevitably comes out the other side of that meat grinder. With trump, it was at least marginally better than what we've gotten on the other side of the biden meat grinder.

Also please remember he's already been president for a full term. We've already run this experiment. If he wanted to retain dictatorial control in 2020 he would have, but instead he eventually conceded and there was a peaceful transfer of power despite all the fearmongering by democrats. Even now rachael maddow is like "he's gonna install himself as president for life!" which is bumper-sticker levels of a retarded take. Prosperity here could mean mass starvation everywhere else, or the world could be countried entirely by Nazicommie states but at least we aren't making war on them.

YOUR OPINION: Sparkle Creed (https://www.newstribune.com/news/2023/aug/08/your-opinion-sparkle-creed/)

Tom Ault, Jefferson City

Dear Editor,

It is 4 a.m. on Sunday; I could not sleep. In my many years on this earth, never have I been more inflamed over the works of some "supposed" ministers of God.

For as long as I can remember, I have attended church and recited the Apostles' Creed. This has been used as a cornerstone in my belief in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for many years. Whether the apostles recited it in the early churches is not known definitely, but we do know that it was written in Greek, around AD 341 by Marcellus of Ancyra and sent to Julius, the bishop of Rome.

While all religious sects do not use it in their church services, it is universally used in many today. For any church having the audacity to claim they are a Christian group (for instance the Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Louisville, Kentucky, and The Edina Community Lutheran Church in Minneapolis) and allow the writing of such a pathetic piece of trash like the Sparkle Creed to be used in a service praising our God is unforgivable. The apparent author is a Lesbian minister, Rachel Small Stokes, recently married to her lesbian partner.

The Edina Community Lutheran Church in Minneapolis posted this as part of a "Pride" LGBTQ+ service.

"I believe in the non-binary God whose pronouns are plural. I believe in Jesus Christ, their child, who wore a fabulous tunic and had two dads and saw everyone as a sibling-child of God. I believe in the rainbow Spirit, who shatters our image of one white light and refracts it into a rainbow of gorgeous diversity. I believe in the church of everyday saints as numerous, creative and resilient as patches on the AIDS quilt, whose feet are grounded in mud and whose eyes gaze at the stars in wonder. I believe in the call to each of us that love is love is love, so beloved, let us love. I believe, glorious God. Help my unbelief."

I believe Catholic and Lutheran Christian believers should write to their leaders regarding the Catholic Future Church movement (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FutureChurch), and the Edina Lutheran Church in Minneapolis and their commitments. All of us should pray for these lost souls!

You can show me the investigation. Weird, right? Almost like, one was a crime (insert 91 felonies) and one was ALMOST a crime. (insert whatever the crime may have been.)

I'm tired of seeing all of them get away with whatever it may be.

The political class in america has been nearly untouchable by the law. Ken Paxton for example.

So we should not start putting people, who have for generations been a protected class of citizen, in jail?

The difference between us is you care which side you're on. I only care about whos been charged. If bernie did something, charge him. I dont give a shit.

Oh please the poor got much richer, this is indisputable. Free markets are by far the greatest ally of the poor because they make goods and services more plentiful and cheaper due to competition for their dollar. What seems to bother you is that the disparity between rich and poor also increased, which is just typical marxist envy. Rather than celebrate how much better off poor people are because of capitalism, you sneer at rich people for having lots of money, as if there's anything inherently wrong with that.

This is the classic critique of marxism; you don't actually care about the poor, you just hate the rich and want their stuff.

Do rich people need to steal?Depends. Winona Ryder was just as mentally ill as some nobody shoplifting, but she had the resources to weather it. And she was famous so people noticed.

But some person who owns a few McDonalds'es can't feasibly run the franchises if they pay each employee fifty bucks an hour. There is an incentive to pay the poverty wages that they usually do, so they are "forced" to rob their employees of the value they each produce. Not to mention whatever arcane franchise contract rules that might affect the dough.

Musk steals the labor value of engineers just like Jobs did, and the rich guys before them, but I'd guess most of them knew it was gonna pan out that way and are fine with it.

I think it varies.

Can we please stop with the debunked LTV crap? There is no surplus value. LTV is not a valid theory. It's been debunked seven ways to Sunday and yet it's still parroted around here as if saying it seventeen times in a conversation makes it more true. It isn't. Value is subjective and the value of labor is the wage. Labor done today isn't worth revenues minus non-labor costs in the future because this ignores the time value of money: namely that capital isn't contributed at the same time that workers do the work or that workers get paid or that product sells. These are different points in time. It makes absolutely no economic sense to suggest that money invested today is worth exactly the same when product sells a year later, just as it makes no sense to suggest that $X borrowed today will always be worth $X repaid at any indefinite point in the future. Borrowing money (and by extension resources) has a real cost over time that can't be just ignored, and "we'll all lend at 0%!" is fiction and not a real solution.

According to journalist Franklin Foer's forthcoming book "The Last Politician," "Harris possessed what one of her colleagues described as ‘rabbit ears,’" Foer wrote. "Whenever there was a hint of criticism of her — either in the West Wing or in the press — she seemed instantly aware of it."

"Rather than brushing it aside, she wanted to know who was speaking ill of her and what they were saying," Foer wrote, noting that when Harris "read a devastating story" on a news website "about her mismanagement of her team," the vice president "responded by briefly freezing out an aide whom she suspected of cooperating with reporters."

"She let the criticism guide her," he added. "Instead of diligently sticking to the Central America assignment, she seemed to accept the conventional wisdom about it. It was a futile gig, so she let it fall to the side, missing an opportunity to grind her way to a meaningful achievement."

Biden simply didn't hand her the substantive role that he played in the Obama administration." "he didn't need Harris in the same way Obama needed Biden."

Harris "asked to be placed in charge of relations with Scandinavia — away from the spotlight."
