Game Mechanics: Sneaks & Ladders

I have been playing a Barbarian rouge on Red99, messing around in Blackburrow mostly. While sneaking around I made my way to the ladder that leads up to the giant snakes. While sneaking, I was not able to successfully get of the top of the ladder. This if my first time playing a rouge so I have no past experience to compare sneak mechanics to.
