Default Internet Connection Issue

I've posted this problem on a couple of boards and had a few people take a look at my computer but none of them can figure it out...

Whenever I open or close a new program that requires the internet (Vent, EQ...never happened with WoW however...) my wireless internet resets and reconnects itself. Once the programs are connected it's fine, but having to reconnect a bunch of times can get annoying. It's also preventing me from watching episodes of House [You must be logged in to view images. I'm using Windows XP Professional with an Encore wireless router (connected to an AT&T Yahoo! DSL modem) and an Encore wireless dongle plugged into a front USB port on the computer.

I've tried using different channels for my wireless network, changing the DHCP release settings, the type of wireless, etc and nothing seems to work. All of the drivers are up to date.

As I said, once the program is connected it's fine, but it takes about 45 seconds extra from the internet resetting to connect to something like EQ, and if I start Ventrilo while playing EQ it resets the entire connection.

Any ideas?

maybe a setting like "autoconnect on internet traffic" or something similiar available? try disabling it or put it on "always on" or something like that ...

Not sure where I would find something like that. I haven't seen it anywhere through all my digging around.

That is bizarre. Can you tell me how long this has been going on?

Quick question, have you tried connecting the router to the computer directly for a wired connection? The reason why I ask is because I'm guessing it's your USB wireless adapter.

I currently use this and have had no issues. In any case, have you tried switching the USB Adapter to a different port?

Connecting the computer directly to the router runs fine and normal. The USB adapter port has been changed. It's been going on since last spring.

Initially, with everything (as far as I can tell) set EXACTLY the same, it ran fine. I got a nasty virus and had to totally wipe my hard drive. I reinstalled my wireless stuff the same way I did previously and this started happening.

If connecting the computer directly to the router works, then it means something is screwing up with the adapter. Some interference.

Do you happen to have any other wireless adapters by chance? What kind of dongle is it? External antenna?

edit: If it's the one that's white and the internal antenna, looks like it's got very mixed reviews on NewEgg with issues similar to yours.
