Introduction
Hi all,
Like P99 players, I played EQ Classic. I started somewhere between Kunark and Velious at 13. I played off and on throughout high school with a RL buddy whenever I could secure my parents' credit card for another month. I remember that time as filled with wonder and enjoyment, mixed with periods of disappointment at being unable to fully participate in the game due to my parents' apprehension. In college, I started my account back up with my own credit card and played a Dwarf Cleric to the mid 50s, which was my highest character by far. After that, I fell prey to the wiles of WoW and other modern MMOs, and the rest is history (and a quite familiar one for many, I suspect). Now as an adult with a job and family, I find myself lacking in social interaction outside work and I'm looking to fill that gap. So I'm hoping to join a guild and find some other new returning players and, on a whole, join this community. I should be starting tonight. I'll try to remember to edit the post to add the name. If anyone wants to collaborate to make a duo that would be cool too! Looking forward to the experience. | ||

Welcome! I have recently come back with a couple friends as well. We have some characters in different places but mostly we are playing Iksars in FoB area and are in the low to mid teens. We have a small leveling guild created and have added some quality people from the FoB area to add to our pool of players to group with. If you only just started you might be a bit too low for some of us but feel free to contact me in game for groups or an invite or whatever. Mostly on my monk by the name of Thees but can also be found on my druid Ballhaus.

Howdy, welcome. I'm a bit surpised at how young so many people were when they played EQ first. The typical age in the huge guild I was in generally ranged from 16-26(and this was was prekunark).
Also, I wouldn't assume everyone played EQ classic. I've ran into at least 2 people who said they didn't even play EQ on a live server, let alone "classic". and I haven't been playing on this server for very long at all. | ||

Interesting. Thanks for the invite and the advice. I started around 13 or 14, but played mostly around 18-19 in college (2004ish).
I'll look you up, but I don't think I'm going to play an Iksar. I always wanted to try a bard and never got very far with it, so I think I'm going to try that first. Deciding on a class is difficult with EQ because each character is such a time investment and yet the classes are so distinct and early decisions do matter at each stage of your journey. Mostly, as I said, I'm just looking for great people to enjoy Norrath with. | ||

Thanks again for the warm welcomes. I've had a bit of success starting out as a dwarf rogue. Got to level 7 and managed to save up a few plat so far. Still not sure how fun rogue will be long-term, as by 10 I think I will have all my important "active" abilities.
From that point on, is it just /attack and BS periodically? Might not be engaging enough toward end game. Any advice/pointers? Maybe someone can help me decide between continuing with the rogue and switching to another class before I get too far in. I plan to play a few nights a week and devote a good chunk of time to the game, possibly even getting involved with raiding and such eventually. So I want to play a class that can contribute in that regard. I'm a capable person and I fear rogue will wind up being too simple for my tastes. From what I've read, that rules a number of the "convenience" classes, like druids, because they're not wanted in raids/groups high end. I don't want to solo much if at all, which is why I chose rogue. Any pointers? | ||

Rogue is great if you don't want to solo and you might raid. They are simple, yet not. There's more to it than just hitting BS on cooldown.
You can sneak/hide. You can sneak pull. You can pick locks (opening up access to certain camps. You can drag corpses better than most/all (depending on the zone.) As far as combat, you have to position yourself for backstabs. On raids, you have to do this whole staying at max melee and with 20+ people in your way. You have to be mindful of your push (when to use it for your advantage and when to move so the mob isn't in a bad spot.) Also, rogues are blenders. You will probably enjoy the bombardment of numbers as you destroy mobs with your daggers. There are less button presses/mouse clicks than a bard or shaman and there is less responsibility when things go bad....but it is still a great class and high in demand. | ||

Hmm, good food for thought. Would a paladin be routinely overlooked in raiding, were I to get to that point? Seems like it may be a bit more fun to have the flexibility of performing any of the standard combat "roles" while leveling, as needed. Or, as I'm suspecting would be the case, would being a contributing member of a good guild render that downside kind of irrelevant?
