Sense heading will not level up unless you place a point into it. Some others might be similar but overall I let them skill up on their own. But when you get a new ability like bash, riposte or other you must at least place 1 point into it.

Actually, it will. It is just the chance of getting a skill up is very, very small.

On my shadow knight I didn't bother training the skill, but had it set to my turn left/right keys. At some point in my mid 20s it skilled up to 1 (so many, many, many failed attempts to skill up) and after I got that first skill up the others came much more quickly.

Pendency aside, it is good to put a few points in to sense heading. It seems about 4 skill is where it begins to raise faster.

On most characters I end up with a huge load of unspent skill points so I don't think you need to worry too much about spending the points wisely, OP. Just make sure you invest in every skill you can besides languages/tradeskills.

Guess after leveling 5-10 levels and never saw it increases I assumed it didn't.... But also if I spam it after putting just 1 point in sense heading I could have it 200 skill before level 5.

However rest of the points depends if you're using certain weapons. Say you get got a new hammer and maybe you should put 5-10 or more points into it.

In my opinion, you should prime every skill to 1 so that you will learn them innately at a faster rate to begin. With a skill of 0 it is very hard to skill up, with a skill of 1 it is much easier.

I don't think that there is ever a reason to ever train combat or casting abilities past 1 skill at the guildmaster. These skills will automatically cap themselves from use by playing the game. Obvious exception apply, like if you simply don't want to wait (10 minutes of combat), or if you find yourself at level 60 and realize you forgot to ever practice bashing or disarming a mob. in these cases, feel free to spend your points on it, but I wouldn't.

I prime every skill and language on my characters and then save the extra points for if I am too lazy to tradeskill something that I want later in the character's career.

Never put more than 1 point into fishing btw, you can fish any fish in any zone with a skill of 1 and a level of 1. (used alts to do my othmir prexus totems and spent very little time fishing)

place one point in everything to help them skill up naturally, it may help with trade skills too.
