Default New to P99... Why is the chat filter so painfully strict?

Hey all,

I'm a new player to P99 who used to play EQ back in classic days. I quit when Vah Shir were brought in (Luclin?) because I felt that cats were too dumb for this world, and then I resubbed and replayed for a while in SoD before quitting again. I'm so happy to be back in classic but I'm having a real problem with the chat filter.

I like to roleplay my characters and the chat filter is just sucking all the fun out of it. Why is it so painfully strict?

I hail someone. Your message was not sent due to spam filter restrictions. I try and roleplay with another player. Your message was not sent due to spam filter restrictions. I try to respond to another player who is talking to me. Your message was not sent due to spam filter restrictions. I try to answer a question to someone in OOC chat. Your message was not sent due to spam filter restrictions.

What the hell is happening on the server that it requires this much stifling of any possible conversation/interaction between players? Sometimes I'm just trying to say thank you to someone that buffed me, or ask another player if they want to party up and it gets sucked up by the filter. I'm having a blast in game, but the chat filter is infuriating.

Anyway, all ranting aside. Hello. Thanks for being a place where I can experience nostalgia for the good old days.

I hope this forum post doesn't get sucked up by spam filter restrictions.

I agree, its overbearing and not very welcoming to new players [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

They did it to stop people making level 1s and spamming various stuff.

If you are under level 5 you might be getting hit by the spam filters they recently implemented. From the latest (1/31) patch notes:

Rogean: Accounts with characters under level 5 will now be subject to the following chat limits across all public channels:
  • 2 Messages per 10 seconds.
  • Messages must be under 80 characters.
  • Messages must contain 70% Lowercase alphabet.
Rogean: All characters are subject to a one message per half-second limitation across all public channels.

These particular rules came about because there were folks creating throwaway characters and mercilessly spamming populated zones. If your messages don't violate the above rules, then I am not quite certain what might be the cause. I personally have never seen the "message not sent" warnings that you mentioned, although I admit to not being the chattiest person around, and I type slow.

We've had a number of immature individuals (with a lot of time on their hands) come through here, so it was necessary to prevent level 1 (through 5, I guess) toons from spamming the server in shout and ooc.

You'll be free from the restriction soon, if not already. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Yeah, I am under level 5. Or, I just hit level 5 last night. Glad to hear it's not a persistent thing.
