Game Mechanics: 56 fire pet won't take weapons

So I tried to give the 56 fire pet: Dyzil's Deafening Decoy a couple gnoll hide lariats and he just ate them. I thought visually it just might not be showing them but no procs either. Tried summoned swords of runes and just eats as well. Same with velium weapons. I don't think it's taking any equipment as giving him a muzzle of mardu doesn't seem to do anything either.
