Default Newbie Barbarian Shaman equipment?

So my journey has begun! Thanks again to everyone who helped me with information in my other thread "Farming Cool Items".

I'm coming up on level 4 on my Barbarian Shaman. I had intended to be Troll or Ogre, but somehow this happened. So hey. I might not have frontal stun immunity or cool regen, but with this face I can make jokes about how I'd give my one good eye for a Fungi Tunic!

Now the main question of my post. Can anyone suggest any quests to do, or mobs to farm or stuff to buy to get some armor and equipment for a newbie Barbarian Shaman? I can't help but think my downtime would be better if I had some more AC.

I do know about this sweet necklace quest http://wiki.project1999.com/Tribunal_Symbol_Quests but that's it.

Any suggestions folks?

First let me preface this with welcome to P99. My one piece of advice is enjoy the journey and don't view the 'end-game' as the goal. Playing the game is the goal.

That said there are a few things you should know. Regardless of what you have heard, Shamans are fairly poor soloers (especially ungeared) early on. Your one redeeming quality at low levels is that Inner Fire is the most efficient heal any class gets for a while (2 hp per 1 mana). At 24 you become somewhat fun/useful with Regen+Canni. At 34 you now have dogdog and the ability to somewhat solo, although not very quickly/efficiently. Once you hit your 40s/50s you are really coming into your own as slow becomes more and more important. Epic / Fungi / JBB are really class defining items and are what make the class so strong late game.

That said, Shamans are very very fun to level, although they start off slow. They get more powerful ever level and become more complex as well. They are a class for the long haul, not the short. If that sounds like what you want then you picked the right class. If not, maybe one such as a necro or enchanter would suit you better.

Don't fret too much over gear. Once you get dogdog you can reliably solo Treants in SK and sisters in OoT and get several hundred plat per hour. Do that for a few hours and you can now afford a full set of jewelery, banded, a decent weapon, etc. The gear you would get from 'farming' as a low level untwinked Shaman will be negligible. Just focus on making friends and grouping. Once you hit your 30s and 40s you will have the ability to do some pretty good cash camps. You can start gearing up then. Also - start your epic early (~30) as it gives you a sick shield you can solo.

Welcome to the server, and don't be afraid to give Red a shot if you get bored on Blue.

Zaril from Red. Shoot me a tell if you come over.

All I know about red is that it's PvP. I... get frustrated if I get killed while trying to do something other than PvP. That's why I love Dark Age of Camelot so much. RvR when I want to. PvE when I want to.

I'm pretty sure Shaman is the way to go. I hope I enjoy the game enough that I'm here for the longhaul.

However, I am kind of disheartened to learn that there's no equipment worth mentioning until 34 when I can farm hundreds of plat.

I guess I figured using something even if it's crappy would be better than having an empty slot.

Appreciate the warm welcome and thank you. I promise if I ever do go to Red, I will look you up.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm saying that it would most likely be a better use of your time in terms of efficiency to just level a bit. The game is much more fun once you can actually do Shaman things and go cool places. Better to farm things at 34 with dogdog than to camp Sisters in Lfay at lvl 14 for a 1 plat sword.

The game is supposed to be about fun. THat's what you argued for, right? The journey and not the end result?

Just grinding levels until I can buy everything is not fun. Getting a new piece of equipment appropriate to my level definitely is. That's where I think our disconnect is.

I couldn't give a damn about efficiency as long as I'm having a good time, which should be the point. I can totally understand the argument for efficiency as an established player. You've seen and done it all and it would be a waste of your time to grab some equipment that you'll level out of quickly, especially since you['ll be able to buy/obtain far more effective gear down the road.

But I really can't think of a way of burning out more than just grinding levels without being able to go find a new piece of equipment every few levels and be like "Haha look at this sweet helmet!"

Like, even if it's buying the gear. In Flatt's (Reptox is his character name) video series Classic Adventures he bought a chest piece someone had sold to a vendor for 17 plat, all the money he had. THen ran from Cabalis all the way across the world to Eastern Commonlands Tunnel to sell it and resold it for 50 plat and did some other trading. He bought some Mater Wu's Trance Stick's for himself and even got someone to turn his spider silk into armor, and sold the rest. That is totally cool! A cross world adventure with rewards at the end? Awesome.

You are NOT going to find Good gear at level 4 trust me. Any Quest you find will be for you to have to be level 15 or more to even get something worth having.

Go to EC Tunnel and get some Buffs from a high level Druid and get a few more levels and start farming HQ Bear Pelts, and Bone chips. Sell them in the tunnel and get some better gear than you are ever going to farm at level 30 or more, for peanuts for some of it.

Or you can go to Blackburrow and do the Gnoll Fang Quest to turn in for XP. Or Crushbone for Belts for XP. Some people might want to get all their stuff the hard way, nothing wrong with it, but it gets pretty boring trying to kill a mob with a 6/40 delay weapon for 20 levels. I often go to the p1999 wiki and look up items in the equipment section - I've been playing a ranger where I only use stuff that Ive looted, quested, or made - so looking at , say, a list of 1 hand ranger usable slashing weapons has led me to a lot of different zones and areas to try and obtain them.

It is hard to find much sub level 20 though. Back when the server opened ( and you couldn't just buy items ) I did the rabid wolves/bear quests in Qhills to farm plat to buy a full set of banded. I used a qeynos kite shield that I got off a guard, and a vendor bought Spear until my 20s, where I quested the testament of vaneer and kited the Bird guy in OOT and got the ebon war spear, and then began questing my Totemic set.

Off the top of my head - That necklace quest is nice, I used it for a long time ( and even the summoned hammer ) I think you can quest some patchwork armor in halas? or you can try and make some yourself. I think theres also a wolf cloak quest or something in halals. The 2 people outside surefall glade have some quests for some leather items. Some hit point jewelry drops in the qeynos sewers I think... basically look up zones, and items found in them, and quests!

Make sure you check the Polar Bears Cubs for High quality skins (30pp in EC) and Polar Bear Skins (10-20p, although hard to find buyers). Bone chips (10p per stack?) Spiderling Silks (something a stack).

You have a pretty great newbie area for money actually.

Also, there is a great newbie quest line for barbarian shaman newbie armor. Look it up. I think Polar Bear Skins might be a quest piece.

I would collect up some of that stuff and head to EC maybe to get a weapon at level 9 maybe when you get gate and sow.

Have Fun!

Newbie equipment!

Go on a quest for banded armor! You need to find another player to make the stuff for you. It may take some travel and finding ways to earn enough money [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Some other quests to get you started once you're past level ten:
* Find Weligon Steelherder in Erudin and ask him about some Deepwater tasks.
* In Northern Karana, a large grizzly by the name of Bristletoe roams. Occasionally one can get a nice jerkin out of his hide. You may want to be higher level to go after him.
* If you're interested in cultural smithing, investigate Imbued Northman stuff.

For lower than ten, try some of these:
* The many bears in Everfrost Peaks yield a great many hides that can be turned into patchwork and more! Even if you can't wear some of what you make, you can always sell it.
* Gnolls in Blackburrow drop quite a bit of armor a Barbarian Shaman can wear.

This is good advice. A full suit of banded not only feels good, but looks badass. That + some starter jewelery such as 4ac/45hp rings, and wis neck/earrings/bracelets will run you probably 500-600pp, which is definitely obtainable by lvl 20-25 if you're dedicated. Do that and solo the first part of your epic to get an amazing shield and you're well off on the gear front into your 40s/50s.
