Default 25/25 vs. 50/50 internet

Hallo all,

I am moving soon and I need to get internet set up. Verizon Fios is the most reliable in the area so that is what I will be going with. My question is in reference to the internet speeds. They quote 25/25 Mbps with the regular service or for $10 more a month 50/50 Mbps.

I usually play P99/ESO/Destiny/Other online games while watching Netflix/Youtube/Hulu Plus/TV. I will be living alone and I will be the only person on my internet. My Xbox One will be plugged in with an ethernet cord and my laptop will be wireless.

Do you think that I would notice a difference between the 25/25 and 50/50 internet? Is the extra $10 a month worth it?

I haven't had to pay for my own internet in a while (always rented a room in a house) and so this was news to me that this even existed.

Any advice is welcome, thanks.

I don't' think the extra money is worth it I'm moving in 10 days and I'm going with the 25/5 cable instead of the next tier.. We do alot of streaming plus I game.. I don't notice a difference now.. I doubt Ill notice then.. of course I will always have the option to upgrade so if the 10 bucks is worth saving, wait and see it you need it..

You'll notice the 50 I did going up from 20, now when I jumped from 50 to 70 I didn't notice it as much.

Being the only person there, you're probably okay with 25/25. I'm on a 40/5 and have boxed 1 blue 1 red while watching netflix, with my roommate & GF each watching youtube/netflix/etc on separate devices without any noticeable lag. There probably would be a change (maybe 50 ping instead of 120?) but I doubt it will impact your gameplay. More visible on something like a FPS or MOBA.

50/50 vs 25/25 shouldn't affect ping under normal circumstances, including both round-trip time and packet loss. If it does, it means you're saturating your connection.

The biggest question is actually how much data is going over your wireless connection. When streaming video (presumably to your TV), you'll want that going over a wired connection if possible. Leave the airspace free for your laptop. With even a 25/25 connection, you may be saturating your local wireless before you saturate your Internet, and this is even more true for the 50/50 connection.

If you follow that, then the 25/25 should give identical performance as far as all games go (including FPS), while your wireless is clean and your Internet unsaturated. If you use more bandwidth than that, you need the 50/50. The amount of bandwidth needed for streaming can vary widely, so it's usually easiest just to measure it.
