Spell Changes from classic

What sort of things we kept from classic in terms of spells? I know there were some things that were changed for whatever reason, like charming players, charming guards, etc.
I'm just curious what tricks might be available to my chanty as he gets higher in levels. I never played back when you could apparently charm a person, and have them attack monsters or guards. That would amuse me haha.
