I thought I might roll a red character but I'm curious how bards fit into PvP.

Colgate is right. There was one teamed with a monk that attacked me outside Blackburrow, I barely made it to the guards. I had a little distance from them at first and then that bard started singing his speed song and I almost croaked.

I think they are effective killers at lvl 52 range. Especially with chants not resisting.
I can't speak for beyond that level. Dolic

Probably the ballerest all around PVP group ever assembled is 2 warriors 2 clerics a bard and a monk
So they are top 4. Every best group ever will have a bard in it. The trouble is that to play a bard effectively you can't really relax at all. Colgate who is a pro describes them as game changing, and I would go even further to describe them as game breaking. Verant didn't intentionally design them to be able to clear entire zones for solo EXP, but they can. They rule.

Also I think it is important to add that if you are asking this question, you may find the bard very hard to play at low levels. They die surprisingly easy, even at level 5, and at that level it is pretty hard to use their songs.
But they just get better and are the fastest class to level to max. There is a learning curve but it is worth it.
