Question Cant connect in Canada?

I have left the states for about 5 days. I currently spending time in Halifax, Nova Scotia up in Canada. However, for some reason. I can connect to the internet at my hotel but I am having an issue connecting to the 1999 Server. It usually hangs when the "Logging onto server list..." window pops up.

Here is what I know:

1.)I connect to a wi-fi service that the Hotel provides.

2.)The Strength of the connection to the network is kinda low (which might be the problem, but I haven't tried logging in closer to the wi-fi router to see if that is the problem. But if I can surf the web right now, then probably that would not be the problem?)

3.) the Bandwidth right now is at 24 Mbps which is about average for this time of day.

The only other thing I would think that could be a factor is a firewall, but I logged on successfully after restarting my computer several times and repairing my IP connection.

I am simply looking for some insight as to why I am failing to connect to the server. My IP should have been Exempt so I dont think that is the Issue either. Anyway, please let me know how I can attempt to remedy this? Otherwise I guess I will just have to wait until I get back home before I can play again.

Thanks for your time.

Hotels are heavily firewalled; this could easily be the case.

Yeah, to touch on what Qaedain said, it's extremely possible that the ports aren't forwarded there at the hotel you're staying at. Past few hotels I've been in recently, I was unable to connect as well.

Theres software (free version) out there that'll allow you to VPN into your home machine over port 80 and tunnel through that son of a bitch to get your eq on.
No port forwarding required and no firewall will stop you on your quest for 12 year old pixels.

or you can goto the front desk and report to them that you play an online game and they are blocking that game. It doesnt really take much effort, and it gives them the opportunity to feel like they made a + in a customer's book when it comes to referals.

Not going to work. Hotels don't employ a network admin. Which means to get it done they need to go through IT at head office if it's a chain or through a consultant that set it all up if it's a privately owned hotel. Either way it's costing them time & money.

Even if they could find a hotel employee with the know how chances are they won't have the authority and login to make said changes.

First I'd try a tracert to 67.23.190.75

If that works, try a telnet to 67.23.190.71 5999 (If it asks for a username just exit, it connected successfully).

That should tell you if the ports are locked down.
