Havent dealt with free lately. Avg got really bloated. Avast had a small footprint. Security essentials...was something. Malware bytes is an excellent scanner.

Been using SUPERantispyware for years now. Haven't lost a single man in this war against viruses with him as our general. Although I did manage to corrupt my own HD at one point with a corrupt win7 install if that counts [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Best free anti-virus software would have to be AV Security Suite.

I'm joking. AV Security Suite IS a virus. I'm thinking someone I know has a comptuer infected with it and tha'ts why I am thinking about it lately and posting aboutit here.

I use Malwarebytes and Avast. I think getting a paid version is NOT a bad idea. In areas whre things matter, paying is usually better. People don't work for free, usually, unless they do it in their spare time.

And btw the best anti-virus is Linux. Lol. Hackers hate windows. The problem is it'll lock you out from most of the games out there and also makes it harder to do some other things which are native to Windows. And if you're familiar with Windows, it might be a little hard at first to adapt to Linux. Some of the distributions will install in a snap and act a lot like Windows, but others can be confusing if you're not ready for it.

Linux is a lot easier to use nowadays than it used to be. I think it's becoming more popular with some people because of the Windows 8 Metro. I know I have NOT appreciated the Windows 8 changes. Honestly, they should have had a switch for Windows 8 so prebuilt systems could be desktop or mobile from the get go. If you buy OEM then you need to set the swich manually. This would have reduced a lot of confusion.

A lot of the confusion stemmed from being thrust into Metro and being unfamiliar with the new interface design. This can be - in part - blamed on the idealogy desktops and mobiles can use the same interface. This idealogy is economical because it's cheaper to have one interface for both, but I think ti's flawed or at best premature. Maybe with more time they can get it right, but indications are they will rush it. I believe there's a bit of arrogance in it too because some of them didn't anticipate the negative reaction.
