PvP Newb

So many questions, I just want some general advice and tips. EQ pvp seems highly intimidating to me, yet thrilling at the same time. Does any grouping/raiding actually happen here or is their constant player interference? If I'm out soloing, I figure I should be checking /who in the zone constantly in case I get any visitors and to be on the look out. How do you trust anyone here? What's stopping someone from being nice and then stabbing you in the back? Are there massive faction hits for killing a player? Anyone that's just a few questions, I don't even know what to ask.
