My uncle chased a guy who walked on his grass down the street and shot him 3 times in the back, killing him. In broad daylight. In front of a dozen witnesses. He spent a grand total of 3 hours in jail. Dallas in the seventies was a crazy place.

Nah, it was a free place where people could just deal with their issues without too much interference from a Nanny State.
