Sirken:

1) Don't bother with Diablo 3. Waste of time + money. Diablo 2 is one of the best games ever made for PC. Highly notorious and disliked by some for the pure click-and-kill fest that it is, but it is glorious.

2) There are 4 game types on Battle.net

Non-Ladder
Non-Ladder Hardcore
Ladder
Ladder Hardcore

Ladder is to D2 is Arena season is to World of Warcraft. The actual ladder is a scoreboard for the entire season. Each "ladder" or season is something like 5 or 6 months long, if I am not mistaken. There's a "ladder" which is just a list of all the highest level players. At the end of each season, the Ladder is turned to non-ladder, and the ladder-hardcore is turned to non-ladder hardcore.

When you get items in the game on Ladder, they are unique to that season with their own stats. When the season is over, those items cannot be had again. They are all moved to non-ladder, and a new ladder season starts, with new unique items.

Hardcore is just what it sounds like. Fucking hardcore. When you die, your character is permanently dead, you lose all items and coin. However, there's a caveat. While gaming with your pals, you can give them consent to loot your corpse if you die. Your character is still permanently dead, however, your pals can go gather your coins and itamz and giev them to your new toon.

Non-hardcore is when your character dies, you just show up in town, nude, and have to do a corpse run. Hardcore is more challenging, and keeps things fresh. Ladder Hardcore is fun because every time it's reset, everyone's back to newbie chars, with people constantly getting the highest level but then dying.

hmm a ladder is basically a reset. everyone on the new ladder starts from scratch. the previous ladder characters get put on the non ladder servers with all the other previous ladders if that makes sense. it would be like putting all the red players on blue and resetting the red server kinda.

i probably made that way more complicated than it had to be lawlz

oh and its usually a race to the first level 99 so there are alot of players come out of retirement for a chance to compete again.
