Default Mage - When to use which pet?

New to mage and was wondering when I should use each different pet. As in, whats the advantages to each pet?

Thanks!

For leveling, make sure you get the torch focus ASAP and then use fire pet until you are well into your 50s. Really no reason to use anything else.

Mid 50s get interesting. I used 49 mage pet until 56 when I got the "Decoy" pet. I'm 58 now and generally use 57 earth pet, although the "Decoy" pet is just as effective in most situations. Just a personal preference.

Earth pet has slightly better defense (mostly because the summoned pet is higher level) and much higher DPS than "Decoy" but worse DS and higher mana cost, particularly since you have to cast DS yourself.

For grouping, Water pet is great for sustained dps (especially 50+ when it backstabs), air pet is great for caster mobs.

Indoors solo Earth or backstab water is essential to deal with runners.

Solo outdoors chain petting.. fire pet w/ torch, lvl 56 dzils once you get there

Earth is typically useless in a group with a snarer being that the root cancels snare.

In a full group you will probably want to use water, unless in a caster intensive dungeon then air.

Or air in a tri'o without a slower.
