roach rush was like, beta era. if nobody scouts and just plays standard, terran is going to have marauders and protoss is going to have stalkers, both of those units dump on roaches for cost. since we're talking about early game, zerg doesn't have any economic advantage that makes spamming roaches a viable tactic.

tl;dr: early roaches? come on man, this is 2011.

Hydras are a lot more common now in PvZ, and see some use in ZvZ depending on spawn locations and openers. However it's not remotely as common as 3hatch/5hatch hydra in broodwar.

anything is viable up until plat or low diamond as long as it resembles a cohesive strategy. but if you are looking for a race to carry you with some kinda cheesy early rush i really think terran or protoss are way stronger choices, especially marine spam, which is way more microable than lings or zealots, or even roaches and stalkers pre - blink.
