I do like mindfuks from time to time, couldn't get into the characters in Monster though, just didn't do it for me.

Recommend something similar to Monster since you're the anime master?

It's not really similar to monster as it's a vastly different setting, but Higurashi is generally considered the best mindfuk anime (First 24 episodes have terrible animation, the second set is much better animated). Bakemonogatari is good too but it's extremely 'artistic' in style and I've found it's very hit or miss with people.

Hmm, i googled Higurashi, i don't think i would like it just based on the art style. Part of the reason i like monster is because its more of a "realistic" art style, for lack of a better word.

I'm not trashing Monster, just wasn't my cup of tea. Higurashi is about a bunch of teenagers so there's that trope.

If you want the more 'realistic' I'd suggest Paranoia Agent. It's another one that wasn't my bag but I know a bunch of fans of the show.

True 'mindfuk' animes are hard to come by so the pool to choose from is pretty small to begin with. Usually you end up with animes that are another genre and happen to be kinda mindfuckey.

This is a very tame scene but is the general idea of the kind of things you'll see in Higurashi, if it doesn't elicit some type of response then the show probably isn't for you. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

So instead of playing EQ, I watched the remaining episodes.

There might be some spoilers, so don't read more of this post!

The ending made me cry, of course. After they had all made the conscious decision to grow up a little, and apologize to Menma for their selfish feelings, it got much better. But the entire time when they were quarreling over who liked who and how their dating lives were going to unfold once she made the return to Heaven, I kinda felt like it was just too much. It was worth watching, mostly for the ending, but it doesn't even come close to being as good as the shows I'd told you about. When you're dealing with heavy subject matter like the death of a child/parent, a spirit on a mission before going to Heaven, and people crazy with grief... jr. high drama somehow feels out of place.

But maybe that's how people that age (14?? I'm never very clear on this with anime) would have handled it; I don't know. I was reminded of my dead friends, and the feelings didn't match up right.

I loved that she became the flowers.
