The problem is a certain segment of the population will immediately sink to personal attacks and believe that is sufficient to validate themselves and their beliefs and they literally do not want to hear reason at this point.

Some people have a strange relationship with the concept, where they think you're violating their freedom to violate other people's freedoms. You're free to protest peacefully, for example. You're not free to block traffic and menace and intimidate other people, those things are crimes which impede the freedom of others. They don't want to have a civil discussion or approach anything with any humor and that should be considered a form of insanity and dangerous behavior.
