Sure they are. They're just not very European. Alexander the Great loved them. Octavius Augustus loved them.

But the sweet variety didn't really come about until the 19th century.

Because there are bixies. Banana flavor comes from isoamyl acetate, which is the same chemical that draws other bees to sting the same target. So after several bixie related deaths, erudites stopped the banana boats. After the resulting market crash, bananas were replaced as a cash crop with dry eye weed, and the trees went extinct.
