Due to the mutagenic properties of magic residue left from wizard portal spells, many plant life around Norrath have been negatively effected. Bananas were once a thriving member of the plant life ecosphere in Kerra Island. When the Erudin race travel to Toxxulia forest, many people believed that the slow degeneration of the life forms there was due to the dark arts of Paineel's necromancer guild. The truth, however, is that when Al'kabor established the greater and lesser spires of translocation, he actually was seeding a death blow to many small creatures. After thousands of years of sucking in toxic wizard fumes, wild dogs became kobolds. The wild cats of Toxxulia forest and Erudin became the denizens of Kerra Island.

Strangely enough, whore's bane grew in abundance, much to the Ogres of Grobb's delight. It is often believed by aracna scholars that all strange and nefarious common day anomaly has roots in the atrocity left by Al'kabor.

Tl;dr: Wizard Farts.
