Hi ForumQuest pals! I like threads like this once in a while, so I thought I'd pop in with a few thoughts.
First, Naez. My opinion is that he's going to die by his own hand. It's been obvious for some time. It will probably happen within months of dropping out of school when he realizes that no one pays for linear modifications to borrowed source code. I used to be a complete AA naysayer, but then I met my friend John. John is a nasty drunk. There is no limit to how much he will drink and he is an asshole when he drinks. He gets into fights. He's also a shitty fighter. He's Irish, with the cliche glass jaw. It's been shattered on two separate occasions, and another time when it didn't break, his molars on the other side from the impact shattered. He goes to AA several times a week, and I encourage it. He's a Randian since he stopped drinking. It's annoying, but he hasn't needed an ambulance for more than two years now. My own alcoholism, as asserted by my pal Harry, is not going well. I haven't had a drink since the bottle of prosecco I drained at the beginning of the month. I'll get myself drunk and post more love notes to him after my class ends in mid-July. Maybe I'll even buy some weed so Harry can call me a junkie. I think EverQuest, as a habit-forming behavior, is most similar to things like gambling and shopping. It has the same sorts of unpredictable rewards that drive lab rats insane. It's hell on employment and social relationships, and also seems to bring out physical neglect. Hailto's error is using Bigfoot as an analogy for the Christian god. This doesn't make him an idiot; it makes him human. As a species, we're known to make mistakes. Russell's teapot isn't a terrific analogy for the Christian deity, either. However, both arguments are sound and valid. They demonstrate argumentum ad absurdum in Hasbinbad's position, which is known as agnostic conciliation. It is not possible to reconcile this position with several parts of Western thinking, notably logic, the scientific method, and Occam's razor. It's difficult to make judgments on motivation, but I am fairly confident that HBB plays at agnosticism specifically for these vapid and repetitive arguments. I often think that most agnostics are playing a weak version of Pascal's wager. If you don't believe in a deity, you don't believe in a deity. If one day you hear God talking to you, see a psychiatrist. Schizophrenia is difficult to treat, but success rates are higher when treated early. If you face the end of your life or lose someone you cannot bear to be without and need to believe in a deity, I'll never state my atheist beliefs to you again. I'll even pray with you. There are reasons we are capable of cognitive dissonance. It's a survival mechanism. As an individual, I have switched positions from being a live-and-let-live atheist to an in-your-face atheist and back again. My current reasoning is that religion is primarily a social need. People want to belong to something and modern culture is lacking in those opportunities. Many people will profess to believe in their bible or other religious text, but most are actually ignorant and will scramble for rationalizations when pressed with nonsensical or socially unacceptable content such as murder, rape, incest, slavery, human sacrifice, and so on. Finally, arguing with Hasbinbad is pointless. He claims evidence from his own mind, refutes widely accepted primary sources, willfully and repeatedly moves goalposts, and inevitably resorts to name calling. Assuming that he is capable of self-examination, he represents the epitome of intellectually dishonest. It's time for bed. Until next time, I bid you all a good night. TL;DR: Hi ForumQuest pals! | ||
