Since I had my torch it just made more sense to use Fire for most of that 29-33 leveling period. Once I hit 34 I started using Water more frequently, especially as someone else said earlier in any location where adds might be an issue.

Also might make a difference if you are chain casting pets or if you're the type that likes to get the highest level possible and then keep it alive.

Regarding all pets, no matter the race/color (joking). The difference between the highest level pet summoned compared to the lowest level is absolutely enormous. Survivability goes up by a huge % if you are soloing.

If you are in a group, the overall dmg output makes a BIG difference at the 'end game', so to speak.

The highest level pet spawned is what you always want, no matter what.

Personally, if I summon the second highest pet I usually stick with it, otherwise, I keep summoning until I get my Top Gun.

I got my torch and chain summoned my fire pets 4-53, then switched to air. The fire pet casts his DS almost immediately upon being summoned, so it made it a no brainer when soloing. I could usually go 1 pet per mob (sometimes 2) before they started to flee, then recall your pet, and kill it with a low level nuke.

Killing a mob at 29-49 using ~310 mana means barely little downtime. Depending on your zone, I'm not sure why the fire pet isn't the obvious choice for everyone when soloing.

On live I ran with my air pet from the beginning and have stuck with it throughout my career there. Except for the 50's after I got my epic pet. I used that until the 61 air pet.

You can tell by the max damage hit of your pet. Send it against a green and check against the Pet guide if its hitting hard enough.

http://wiki.project1999.com/Pet_Guide

Eventually (after 20 I think?) you'll start getting only blue pets, then ~39 you'll have to deal with the occasional green pets.

Exactly what the above post says.

At 39+, your pets will ALL be blue at 39/44/49. But as soon as you go up a level or more they will start considering green.

Example:

1. YOU are level 40 or 42. You summon one of your level 39 pets. Some will con green.

2. YOU are level 44. You summon your level 44 pets. They will all con blue until you ding 45.

3. Profit

This guy gets it. Fire pet = no downtime if done right.

Last time I will say this:

Water pet = no downtime if done right.

Same goes with any other pet you wanna choose. Fire pets are plain and simple a liability IF by chance you get multiple mobs and are trying to live/run/gate.

In a perfect situation, Fire is great. Otherwise, I hope you don't die.

The first time I died on my mage was at 52. I hope you learn to play before giving advice about mages.
