And this is exactly why I don't do programming as a career. Very well said. I knew about this environment before I chose a different path (although still in the IT Field). Programming is my Hobby. As a job, I'm a network engineer. The two areas compliment eachother very well while keeping me interested in doing both of them.
Also the reason I switched to the business side. I still try to stick up for our developers and intercept shitty requirements where I can.

Hehe I just read the original piece of code that sparked this debate. Godparticle, you desperately a little practical programming experience (and some humility).

Rogean's solution is a simple sprintf which will finish in (conservatively) 500 cycles or 100ns. Your solution requires a database lookup, with multiple locks/unlocks. You even mentioned the HARD DRIVE. If the hard drive is invovled we're talking on the order of milliseconds which would make your solution 10,000 times slower. But more probably the DB would cache stuff in RAM so your solution would only be 500x slower.

Rogean's also doesnt have a random saying, updatable in realtime, apples and oranges. There isn't multiple locks, myisam is table lock, that's why it excels for reads

Bet your "outsourced" coders are having a field day coding to your textbook, pie in the sky specs, knowing you have no knowledge to evaluate the actual quaility of their work. Assuming you actually have a job which I kind of doubt.

lol you know what term is misused to piss people off.. "Senior". People everywhere will randomly stick that in front of their title to get some jollies over coworkers. I laughed when one of the other network engineers started doing that last year. He didn't last long.
