The only thing I can think to try (I don't know anyone else who's playing on Windows 8 to pass any issues on) is WinEQ.
I've never used it myself but its a shot in the dark, rather than using the normal client. Could encounter the same problems if its a directX issue... however I did see someone playing WinEQ on Windows 95, and I'm fairly sure there'd be some directX issues there [You must be logged in to view images.
