Can't speak for the US but in the UK a wireless data service is way more expensive than some home internets...and tethering is under lock and key here, pay big monies or no dice.

Tethering is shady now? I do not have wireless in my place, so if I want to take my laptop and play from my couch or from my bedroom, I have to use my phone to connect to the internet.

paying for mobile hot spot is stupid, I have a HP Pre3 and use freeTether on my unlimited verizon data plan. Its great if the home internet goes down etc etc or I am out...or need to raid in the car!

I would suggest looking up an android app rather than use the built in tethering options that are usually blocked etc from the carrier so you can 'pay' them for the ability to use your phone as a hotspot...when it can and should just be able to do it by itself.

My Tmobile G2 has a built in Hotspot feature. seems to work better then actually tethering the phone to the laptop when i travel.

I asked him about cost. Said he is on a family plan and has unlimited data - Sprint. He told me the amount he pays for his phone, but I don't remember at the moment. It wasn't outrageous though. I imagine he is on his parent's plan, and he is only paying for the additional phone and data pack charge.

Download foxfi from android market. Your phone willnt allow you too but there are ways round that. I use my phone as wifi hotspot while playing cause it is dumb to pay an extra $50 for internet when my phone has it. And dont worry about if you have unlimited data or not. Foxfi alllows you to put your phone under a proxy which hides it from your carrier(I have att). I have my phone, wifes as hot spot and never been caught( eq, bay pirate and so on)

Lol @ pricks automatically assuming the worst about someone.

Anyway, I use foxfi to tether my phone to laptop throught bluetooth. It works ok for web browsing and eq (usually runs fine lil higher than normal ping though). When you can't acceas wifi or home intwrnet tethering seems to be a reliable option.

My biggest concern was that I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan which would likely be terminated if verizon found out I was tethering without paying their 40 to 50 dollar monthly fee for 2 gb of data. Is there a way to avoid this? Can they tell I'm tetherinh to begin with? Like if I use youtube on laptop that's tethered to cell phone will verizon be able to tell the difference between that and my cellphone using youtube?

I've used foxfi and pdanet a few times while at work to play eq.
Both worked well and I didn't reciever any warnings or notices from verizon, although eq is very data conservative. It comes out to less than 100 mb of data per hour played. So...should I even risk verizon finding out? Or should I play it safe and suffer through no eq while at work?

I suggest waiting for your IP Exemption. Tethering is like, borderline shady. Because why else would you need one when it only takes a few days to get an IP Exemption now? I wish they could find a way to prevent tethering completely.
yeah iv been waiting like a week and a half and i have got no reply yet and keep bumping post.

I was doing the same thing as you mate, playing off my Iphones wireless network and pining over 1k-3k ms/ping. Its not worth it. it sucks to play with and you can fix it. But i do suggest, like Slave said, wait for the ip exemption which is the same thing i am doing right now also.
