What he said. But, I think you have to be close to each if you want to share XP and avoid the pet penalty.

Example : in lake of ill omen. A necro is soloing at the windmill and another is soloing at the sarnak fort and are both in the same group. Their exp would not be shared because of the distance. Would that still cancel out the exp penalty of the pet ?
Never checked it but I'd be fairly sure that if the XP is being awarded to one character in a group, that the pet's damage will be a factor.

Maybe give something like that a try and post your findings? [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I would love to see some data on this situation. Anyone with a % UI willing to make two lowbies with pets and run some tests?

I have two questions.

1) Along the lines of the distance statement above, has anyone tried grouping with a significantly lower level character in the same zone and see if full exp would be granted to the higher level soloer?

2) Has there been any consensus or evidence in live patch notes when the exp penalty for pet damage was changed? I've heard so many people say that this is not how it was on classic timeline and others say this is how it was indeed on live.

I've seen the patch notes somewhere; it's totally accurate. I don't even think it gets removed by the end of Velious. This is a permanent change.

you also missed the group with anyone in zone and xp

when server first opened, first week or so, i was an assling in misty thicket, we would all group and run around kill stuff and get xp anywhere in zone, good times

also we had serverwide ooc

i dunno, pet classes are out, go make a hybrid i hear the xp nerf gets lifted then why would you wanna play a pet class

I don't believe it about charmed pets.
I regularly kill mob with charmed pet doing just 5 points of damage (shallow breath) and still get half a blue of xp.

Here is evidence for naysayers: http://everquest.allakhazam.com/story.html?story=960

Pertinent quote: "In the old scheme, if a pet did more than half of the damage to a monster, it took half the experience reward."

This post was in 2002; Luclin came out in 2001. However, this post is not the patch note itself; it is commentary on a patch note. Nevertheless, I think it's safe to assume that the patch was around the same time as the post, meaning that for P99, the "old scheme" is permanent.

All I know is a year ago or more a Mage could rip some serious ass soloing XP wise. Not any more. I gave up on mine.

Have you heard of.... dismissing your pet?

L2Mage man cmon.

Clarification since I didnt bother reading a lot of the nonsense in this thread.

Do more than 50% damage, you get 100%

Do less than 50% damage, you get 25%

Group Must be in zone AND in range (Distance not level)
