Maybe I just have higher standards but I wouldn't say that his comment exhibited exceptional intellectual ability, creativity, or originality as you claim. Maybe I am just ignorant for having trouble finding any context where what he said was anything but cringeworthy.

I am going with the last part.

Let's look at blacks in America, the people who you currently have your panties in a bunch over.

1) the already refer to each other as ****** in friendly and not-so friendly situations. (regardless of spelling or how they pronounce the word)

2) most black people now laugh it up, make jokes about it regularly and generally try to move on and let the word lose it's shock factor. The only people trying to keep up on the stage would be closet racist whites, those people who are so afraid of other people and their skin color, they don't want to try and upset them with a silly word.

3) Black Americans are moving forward from the word and downplaying it's meaning, closet racist White Americans are trying to hinder the progression by keeping the shock value in the word.
