Another important consideration is if you want to group or solo primarily. Certain classes, like Rogue/Warrior, won't be able to level without a group.

Necros fulfill everything you said quite well. Except they have a more difficult time finding groups as they are mostly a solo class. Also, they do no close combat damage.

Rogues/Monks are good at close combat damage but have no spells. They are much easier to get groups for though.
I disagree about necros having a difficult time finding groups. If anyone's grouped with a good necro they can surely vouch for the necro's utility. Assuming you're in a dungeon with undead (most high levels do) necros put out charmed hasted pet DPS while healing mana free and CCing through snare / root / mez.

If your necro friends are not doing these things, send em my way.

Welcome aboard.
Yellow = self target
Purple= group spells
Green = AE spells
Red = targeted spells
Can't remember PBAE spells, blue I believe.

Stick with your mage 'till level 4, your pet wil change your play style so much! Remember to buy some components to summon your pets (not sure of the low level ones, chck the wiki).
AE that are hurt myself?

From your play style and everything...i would say make a shaman with the right gear and weapon u can attack or have your pet attack aswell.

The perfect class for you would actually be a beastlord but they will never be on this server.

Or if you still want a pet and still b beastly make a Shadow knight...the pet is just kind of there as you will do most of the work...but ur strong can take hits give dmg...its a very well rounded class.

Or an Enchanter, u have spells and all the goodies of a caster, but everything can be your pet...the monsters are your pets...u want a caster pet tank that kind of monster, you want a tank pet, take that kind of monster...it is a little harder as you would have to charm your own pet every so often, but there is a large amount you can choose from.

The game is different for every single class. That is what makes classic everquest so great. There are so few classes that the developers had to make them all unique.

Don't just try a mage out, try out other classes as well. Most don't come into their own until level 20+, so you should still do a little research since that'll be 10+ hours of your life leveling.

Agreed, as a necro, I don't have much spare time in a group. A necro can bring a lot to the table and will mainly act as a good dps (don't expect to meet a mage or monk dps on a xp group, unless you hunt undead) and as fuel to the group. If your group tends to run on diesel, add a necro and it will run on regular petrol, much like an enchanter although he does it differently (the chanty would make your group run on kerosene).
Having said that, I haven't met a lot of necro who knew how to play their class to its fullest in group (and I learn something new everytime I group) and an underplayed necro is a liability, probably more than any other class (except maybe a tank).
