I'm doing something like 1500 dps @ nightmare and it still takes forever to kill monsters in full games.

DPS doesn't matter in D3. If you focus on DPS you WILL DIE and will need to use 10,000 heal pots.

D3 is more about judging defense vs offense. My 300dps monk has died like once in clearing Normal and so far to Heaven in Nightmare.
