The reasons people go role/anon have been covered. As for me I go role or anon when a GOD or dragon has spawned or I am in a raiding zone. Sometimes when I am actually LFG and on /role or /anon it is b/c I actually forgot to turn it off until I do a /who. Just a user error.
A tactic I would suggest is to do /who all (insert zone name here). Then pick someone from the list and send them a tell asking to do a quick CC . This saves travel time and you can even make friends this way. Also speaking from one of higher guilds on the server, we mostly use vent and guildchat which cuts out the need to show what class you are

If I am busy doing something on my druid I make myself anon because otherwise I'll get too many "port me" tells. Being a non-anon druid in an outdoor zone can be especially bad, I'll get a tell every 15 minutes or even more. At a certain point it's just easier to hit anon rather than have to say 'no' to a succession of people, any of whom might take it as a personal affront.

Check. Either that or you're just looking for a reason to argue with folks. Whatever blows your hair back.

It doesn't bother me one little bit, and is each player's individual decision and right as to whether or not they go /role or /anon. If I'm playing my wife's druid, I go anon instantly. If I'm playing her toon, it's to catch her XP up to mine and not field a single port request. On my paladin, I rarely go /role or /anon. The group invites in /tell are really nice. On my live server, paladins rarely got unsolicited tells for groups. I love getting those tells! From my perspective alone, I'm quite surprised other players' use of these tags bothers you. The only thing I understand is being frustrated after getting to a zone that looked empty due to /anon and it being full of farmers. I don't agree with getting upset enough over it to start a thread, but I sure understand it. Consider thine hair back blown!

Regarding /anon or /role causing you to be mistaken about whether a zone is crowded/camped etc:
If you're intending on making a trip to a zone that'll take some effort, it's good habit to send a tell to someone that is visible in the zone asking what's camped...particularly if you have a specific spot you'd like to camp. Not only will you get a better idea of what's going on in the zone, it isn't uncommon to get a response like "We're at sol b royals but we have x person about to leave, want to replace them?". I've been on both sides of this multiple times. | ||
