2001 and the Patriot Act. Biggest blow to individual rights ever. The Patriot Act broadly expands the official definition of terrorism, so that many domestic groups that engage in nonviolent civil disobedience could very well find themselves labeled as terrorists. Government agents may now monitor the First Amendmentprotected activities of religious and political institutions, and then infiltrate these groups with no suspicion of criminal activity. A U.S. Department of Justice directive actively encourages federal, state, and local officials to resist and/or limit access to government records through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Law Enforcement authorities may now conduct secret searches and wiretaps in your home or office without showing “probable cause.” They need only to claim that intelligence gathering is “a significant purpose” of their intrusion, even when the primary goal is ordinary law enforcement. They may also monitor where and to whom you send and receive e-mail, or where you go on the Internet, recording every e-mail address and website you have been in contact with. Law Enforcement may now demand any personal records held by any source including your doctor, employer, accountant, or library. All they have to do is claim that it is related to an investigation into “terrorism.” The record keepers may not reveal that your records were provided to the government. Judicial oversight of secret searches has been effectively minimized. The Patriot Act directs judges to consent to secret searches based only on the Government’s assertion that a “significant” purpose of an investigation is gathering information related to “terrorism,” as the government defines it. AND NOW THEY'RE ATTACKING THE INTERNET. ( SOPA and PIPA). Slow and hardly noticeable my ass. People have just been too busy watching Dancing with the Stars or some shit.

I'm still amazed there are people who will rage over welfare yet support locking up people for drug use. Prison is the most expensive form of welfare out there. Of course, we all know why things like this happen. When people are scared and insecure they tend to suspend some of their critical thinking skills. This makes marketing a "solution" to them a lot easier and politicians take advantage of this all the time. The result is bad policy and infringement on our constitutional rights. | |||

The tyranny of the majority is no more just than the tyranny of one. Neither a dictatorship nor a democracy is desirable in my view. Individuals must interact socially on a voluntary basis, and to me the only solution seems to be complete emancipation from societal constraints that force involuntary interaction. I've already got my 5 year plan in motion to separate myself from society as much as humanly possible (is that irony hasbinbad?). And no, I'm not moving to Alaska or some crazy shit like that to be a hermit, although that doesn't sound all that horrible.

Fortunately, we're not a pure democracy but rather a constitutional republic. In theory, at least, the tyranny of the majority is limited by constitutional protections.

I don't want to separate myself from society really in that way, I just want to interact with people on a voluntary basis. For that reason self sufficiency is my end game. Obviously that isn't completely realistic if you still want the every day comforts of life. Plus, I'm way to social to do one of those completely off the grid type things. I think I've found a pretty happy compromise already. Just need to be a wage slave for a few more years.

Loke, when you were a wartime special forces bad-ass motherfucker with a big ass gun, did you ever say to yourself:
"I'm so proud that I get the opportunity to risk my life for big time Wall St. bankers to make billions of dollars in personal profits?" If so, Harrison is right about two things, the other being his opinion of me. If not, please set "The Entire Community Of Project 1999" straight.
