Is making a cleric fucking pointless unless I have a DPS to protect me the entire time i play? Or do people seem to ignore killing clerics as they may need a rez in the future?

Welcome to Everquest. Some classes are more group-based classes, who can't or shouldn't solo. Killing light blues is not fun.

all clerics will need a guild

once in a guild you need to find yourself (or create) a clique in that guild for best results
but a guild, or at least a few RL friends is necessary to level up

Necros are fun, but do not expect many groups. This is a good class for a solo pvp'er. Pet makes it easy to tackle higher level mobs. Bad in dungeons though.

Druids are fun to play and are the most versitile. You will be good solo and groups. Will be desired early on for sow/heals/ports. You can make decent coin just sitting around porting people.

Wizards are fun in the beginning but get boring later on. Good to have in a pvp ganking group though due to high dd's but will lose that once people get resists.

Also, clerics are one of the best 1v1 classes in the game to the asshats saying they NEED a dps.
