Friendly Guards Kill!

Was there a point in the live classic timeline when (an otherwise) friendly guard would kill you if you casted a detrimental spell on yaself? Like canny or low cost sot to practice conj or whatever.

Anyone else recall this? I started jan2000 so not super early in timeline for me.
Or, am I on drugs?
