Well I feel bad only having a re-post, so I’ll post a more recent, but less interesting call:
School calls for an out of control 9ish yr old girl. The info I got was she was escalated and unable to de-escalate. I arrive at the school and it’s a battle scene. Pots are knocked over and broken outside, and a female admin member is holding the front doors to the school shut with all of her might. Inside the front lobby I can hear wailing I ask the staff “don’t you guys have a sensory room (formerly these used to be called time out rooms but that had too negative a connotation) somewhere so you wouldn’t have to lock down your front lobby?” The staff says yes we do but we can’t get her in there. I notice the girl is being restrained by the school’s behavioral health specialist guy and a female staff member. The kid is trying to hit anyone near her, or break anything near her I’m talking with the mom/guardian about her options, and I say “I haven’t asked the school yet, but I’m guessing they won’t want her to finish her day, so your two options would be to either take her home to or a behavioral health hospital or an ER if you can get her there safely” The mom asks if she calms down can’t she just finish her day? She does this because she wants to leave. The school staff says “no at this point she is expelled”. I thought whoa, this girl musta been giving this school a lot of problems… Somehow this girl, who was a bit big and chunky for her age, must have cast the spell Berserker Spirit on herself, and tore out of the grasp of the behavioral specialist, and rips the door open, dashing out the front door into the parking lot towards the busy city street I could have easily run her down and wrapped her up but we are not allowed to touch or restrain clients so all I can do is call 911 because she’s at risk of getting hit by a car trying to flee at this point. A combination of the school staff and her mom are able to get to her, and I see her mom carrying her back towards the school lobby wrapped in a bear hug But unfortunately the kid’s arms are free in the hug and she’s just wailing on her poor mom’s face with punches and slaps. This kid could have a future in MMA. They get her into the lobby and she has to be restrained again. But by now the fire department has shown up from my call, and 5 big burly firemen dudes go in the lobby to take over They attempt to do a combination of restraints and talking the girl down and none of it is working for almost another hour. This battlerager of a kid is not intimidated in the slightest by all these big firemen dudes, she’s still ready to take them all on So at this point the fire captain comes out and asks the mom “do I have your permission to use a chemical restraint on your daughter?” I remember thinking damn, I have never seen or heard of the fire department doing that with a kid this young, I didn’t even know that was possible. I’ve seen it with adults many times though The mom says yes and one of the fire guys gives the girl a shot in her arm. I’m talking with the mom about options and the next steps and in about 15 minutes I see the girl getting wheeled out on a gourney. She has this drunk, very happy look on her face as she plays with a small stuffed animal and giggles I’m thinking damn, I need to start thrashing around hitting stuff so I can get dosed with whatever she got!
