O donmt think you’re remembering right. Often Priest of Discord would be twinked to the gills with bronze armour, etc. I don’t think it was only enchanters/bards doing so.

PoD was probably charm immune too

They would only equip if it was charmed. They would just eat them otherwise.

Mobs definitely equipped items you gave them. I have vivid memories of giving an extra Ghoulbane we got to a green frog and training him to entrance so we could transfer it to a mule. I don't have any evidence, and I'm sure others remember this however.

That would suggest that the current way it works on p99 where when you trade items to NPCs uncharmed they will equip them but not drop them is incorrect.

People would troll Uber guild by handing Dain weapons to make him harder, was definitely a thing.

Can't say for certain they equipped non-weapon gear if not charmed tho.
