EQ PVP wasn't at all popular in the classic timeline either. It's always been niche. Usually populated by people that love to grief other players, rather than playing the game with a little PvP mixed in.
Says who. Yes there were less servers and ultimately less players but there would be up to 500 people in gfay trading and pvping on tallon zek during kunark. Big wars between gnomes and elves everyday. Just for fun nothing to gain, not even yellow text. Half of the people naked which is really fun because your spells actually landed and did damage.

All of that is impossible to replicate in this day & age unfortunately for a multitude of reasons

Says the total lack of players on any PVP servers, that's who. The ones that did play on them boasted about how they'd camp the newbies and grief them.
EQ PVP has always been terrible, the game wasn't designed with PVP in mind.

Oh come on, in TZ Faydark is was mostly roleplaying. That was the attraction of the PVP servers, the perceived potential for conflict, not the actuality of it. Most sessions would go with no major pvp.
