Masters of Orion (1 and 2) were great games though! I played many games of both, and even played the latter ("hot seat" style) with a friend.

If you haven't tried it, I'd also strongly recommend Master of Magic (DOSBox), Caster of Magic (a sort of fan-made 1.5 version, also on DOSBox) and the modern remake (it's not as good as the originals, but still fun). All are arguably rip-offs of (the original) Civilization, but they're different enough to still feel separate from both Civilization and Orion. Freelancer is great, and you can keep playing after the story ends. There's a newer game that's similar called Underspace that I recently started, but only have about 3 hours in so far.
