Hi, I just started a Barbarian Shaman on P99 Green. I've never played before and I have no idea what's going on. I've been itching for something "new but old" and decided to try this out.
My major MMO experience is Runescape, Guild Wars 1, and WoW up through Cataclysm. I've tried getting back into WoW but have failed to find a social group to really make the grind fun. I'm going in pretty much blind here. I want to discover instead of following a guide. That said, if there are any guilds out there want a new body, let me know!

Welcome to P99, As someone who rolled a Barbarian Shaman as my first ever toon back in 1999 its definitely a unique way to experience everquest for the first time, with that said I came to realize much later that the life of a barbarian shaman in norrath is much tougher than most other race/class/starting zone combos are for a brand new player, in a game thats much harder than virtually any modern game.
Don't get discouraged, if you're finding that your choice isn't working out you can always try out a different combo to find something that fits. If you do stick with the shaman they get much stronger over time. The pets are OP once you get to those levels and slow is a beautiful thing to make your life easier.

Ain't that the truth! LOL. Wait until you roll a Dark Elf and see the difference in night vision. Welcome! Enjoy! I'm also on Green, and addicted to helping newbies. Look for Sammo, Biao, and Aneya - if you need a hand reach out in game!

As for guilds, https://wiki.project1999.com/Green_Guilds has a pretty up-to-date list. You'll want to focus on the Casual section, at least initially. Welcome!

Halas is one of the most isolated starting spots, and going Barbarian means you'll be blind at night, which can really suck. You probably won't be seeing a lot of other players nearby. Blackburrow is the nearest newbie dungeon. If you're not having fun, don't be afraid of changing it up.

Friendly Druids is the biggest leveling guild. It's kinda chaotic and leaderless. The leader invites people en-masse in the newbie leveling areas but is otherwise inactive. Good place to ask questions and talk to other completely-new people. No organized events, and because it's kinda anything-goes there's a couple of real weird people who might be unpleasant. Mutiny split from Friendly Druids, wanting a more active leadership with more guild events. Still quite casual I think. Denial is one of the newer, smaller guilds. I think a lot of them stream on Twitch. The ones I've talked to seem nice. Lineage is a newish raiding guild. They're in the draft, which means they've killed some hard targets and compete with the other hardcore guilds for first-to-engage. Syndicate is the newest raiding guild. They haven't yet qualified for the draft, so they're still up-and-coming with a lot of targets still out of reach. They're in an alliance with Lineage, so they raid together as well as having their own separate raid events. Best introduction to the raiding scene IMO, which can sometimes feel overwhelming. Good Eggs is a leveling guild that I believe has some sort of loose connection to Good Guys, a raiding guild. I'd recommend joining Friendly Druids at first. It's a good place to ask questions and find other newbies to group with. Then after you've gotten used to EQ and have met a couple people from various other guilds you'll be better placed to think about what guild might be a good longer-term fit. Post your character name so people can reach out in game! I know I've got a decent newbie weapon I'd give you.

In all seriousness though, it's only to a guild's detriment not to use that page. I've tried to make it as easy as possible to edit: you can basically just copy another guild's row, replace it with your guild's details, and be done in under five minutes. Guilds that don't are missing out on a bunch of potential recruits ... who will end up applying for guilds that did take the five minutes.

Thanks for all the replies!
I've done a lot of character hopping to check out the different cities. I don't know if he'll be my main, but I've settled on a human Necromancer named Pyglaan for now. I'm mostly hanging around the gates of Qeynos while I figure out some basics. I think I'd like to avoid gifts or carries, but I'm happy to talk if you see me in game. I'll also check out some of those guides mentioned to get a little bit of direction. Thanks again!

Joining a levling guild is probably the best advice. This game can be quite unforgiving but also very rewarding. You probably got a taste of it running around at night time on a human^^
I would also like to mention Dial a Port as a great levling guild. A well run guild with active guild chat and theyre very helpful. Its mainly a Porting service guild but they invite other people aswell. Easy to get buffs and ports around Norrath
