Default Looking for an experience similar to my Monk adventures.

I first started P99 because I saw Reptox's youtube series 'Everquest Classic Adventures' and fell in love with the game. Here is a link and I strongly recommend it

I wanted to experience the same journey as he did and overcome the various challenges of playing an Iksar Monk for my first character (my level 9 Barbarian Shaman doesn't count). I had an absolute blast solving the problems of being hated by everyone because I was a lizard with the Monk toolkit and asking strangers for things like Invis so I could get into Freeport to bank etc.

I'm coming back and I'm looking for a similar journey. One that has challenges that I have to overcome, but I was hoping for some help and feedback on what that could be.

I had thought perhaps Necromancer? I'm open to anything really, so hit me with whatever suggestion you think would be fun. Hell, I'm even open to doing Monk again since I never actually finished him. I broke the rules and was punished, so that's still kind of unfinished business for me.

What do you guys think?

Necro would be a good choice if you're looking for that sort of solo-adventuring, me-against-the-world vibe. Also a very thematic class. If you don't want another Iksar and enjoy faction challenges then go DE, their faction is similarly bad outside of Neriak/Grobb/Oggok. Downside of a Necro is you might actually find it not challenging enough to be interesting, as you can easily solo a Necro to 60 with minimal gear.

If you're wiling to impose restrictions on yourself, you can make things a lot more challenging for yourself (i.e. solo self-found) with any race/class combo, but particularly melees. Not sure if that's what you're looking for, but always an option. If you wanted to do another Monk playthrough you could go Human and work through the Sash/Headband and Treant Fists questlines. There's a lot of meat and thematic richness there, and they even tie into the Monk Epic.

Bertoxx necro is a fun romp.

Do all the qeynos newbie quests and take it slow, play as one of the most hated necromancer cults in norraths history.

The sewer of qeynos is green, because these cultist freaks poisoned every woman and child in qeynos by pooring toxic bertoxx poitons into the water.

Master your poison bolt as the most vile and foul and hated necromancers possible.

Thank you both for taking the time to write something - I greatly appreciate it.

I was thinking if I do go Necro, it's probably going to be Dark Elf due to the fact I've never played one, Neriak is the best city in the game, and I think there's necro specific quests in Neriak that only DE's can do or something? Some scythe I think.

I think if I go Monk again, I'll probably be Iksar once more. I really liked the regen and it really does feel like playing on Hard-mode since you're a lizard and the entire world is against you. Getting enough faction to not be KOS is like a big questline all in itself. Even if there'll be some places I'll never be able to walk freely.

If anyone has any other class/race suggestions, I'm still definitely open to them and would like to hear from you!

Haha. Something about decay and death and disease is too gross for most people to enjoy. Like, I think Nurgle and the Chaos Marines who worship him are the grossest thing ever out of 40k, for example. But some people are super passionate about it.

The catacombs and sewers beneath Qeynos are super cool though.

If I was a Dark Elf Necro, would I be able to go into the sewers there and not aggro the NPC's?
Where else would my DE Necro be able to go without being KOS? Aside from my Iksar monk I have no experience with any of the Evil races/classes.

It's a different kind of experience than what you've talked about due to the self-sufficiency of the class.

But a few years ago I started a Druid on Green and didn't buy a single piece of gear from another player til like level 40. I replaced all the decaying skeleton dropped cloth by like lvl 6 or 7 with vendor purchased regular leather armor.

Then by level 30 or so I was able to upgrade that to, I believe it's called Mesh armor? If not Mesh, its the same tier, dropped by frogloks in guk. Which is if I'm not mistaken identical in AC and appearance to basic leather but weighs nothing (or almost nothing!)

I also used the wiki to find ways to obtain gear on my own (+3 wis shoulders from crushbone-- prayer cloth of tunare, testament of vanear quest for offhand-- using track to find the reed belt out of dagnors etc); even found camps like shralok pack, travelers pack etc to get myself some decent weight reduction gear.

The self found aspect really gives you an appreciation for even VERY minor up grades (a la the reduced weight mesh armor from guk.) It also leaves you something to look forward to once you get high level-- leaves some carrot on the stick, if you will.

I think I shifted gears at like 48 or 50 and ended up gearing the druid. But it was a TON of fun getting there. There are several approaches to soloing various camps. And while not highly sought after for groups, , it's very possible to form a group by sending tells to players in appropriate level ranges. Especially once you can port to pick them up

Getting around via ports is easy once you gain access to them. You get invis, buffs, heals, nukes, dots, roots snares.

So basically the experience is one of figuring out how to use your class toolkit to overcome various challenges to do a (mostly) solo run, as well as a self-found ruleset, made a little less stressful by the fact that you're playing a nearly totally self sufficient class

I wouldn't call it the same type of "challenge" but I really enjoyed making an Enchanter and only leveling at off the beaten path camps until the mid-50s (for the most part). Their toolkit makes it super easy to get around, dungeon dive, etc.

I XPed on those yeti things on a random iceberg/island in TD for example. Tried charm killing the spectral mobs in Trak's Teeth. Killed guys in that random area off to the east in FV. Explored Gorge. I did do some traditional camps here and there, like Treants and some guards, in order to boost my plat a little bit, but overall I tried to do it on random EXP camps that I'd never really done before. It was a fun time.
